Specifically, investors have a tendency to get swept away by the fear or euphoria of the recent past.
This is called "recency bias," and it's often accompanied by financial loss.
"People need to understand that recency bias is normal, and it's hard-wired," said Charlie Fitzgerald III, an Orlando, Florida-based certified financial planner.
Investors are most vulnerable to recency bias, he said, when on the precipice of a major life change such as retirement, when market gyrations may seem especially scary.
