To the Editor:Re “Why Medical Students Are Shunning Pediatrics,” by Aaron E. Carroll (Opinion guest essay, July 7):The dwindling number of physicians choosing to pursue pediatrics is a grave concern to me as a pediatric resident physician, particularly given the increasing number of children with complex medical needs and chronic conditions. Soaring rates of pediatric mental health challenges have also strained the general pediatricians who navigate providing care in busy clinic schedules while our patients wait months to see psychiatrists or developmental pediatricians. Dr. Carroll notes that low reimbursement for pediatric care is a key reason for lack of interest in the specialty, with about half of American children insured by Medicaid or CHIP. The evidence is clear that health in childhood predicts health later in life. Pediatricians have the opportunity to address issues that can lead to lifelong health challenges early, from diabetes to substance use, ultimately saving the health care system money.

While most of their issues I can address over the phone, some need a recommendation for a pediatrician for in-person care. There aren’t enough pediatricians right now, and because of that, some kids are unable to get the care they need. In New Jersey, children who need a developmental pediatrician wait a minimum of three months. In Philadelphia, kids can wait three to six months for a pulmonologist and four months to see an allergist, and many can’t see a developmental pediatrician at all. The results of this year’s medical residency match — a process where medical students are paired with residency programs in U.S. hospitals — were startling.

November 21 - The Florida Panthers, who will go for their third straight win when they play host to the Boston Bruins Wednesday night, are getting an unexpected contribution from defenseman Niko Mikkola. July 1, the Panthers signed Mikkola to a three-year, $7.8 million contract. Indeed, in just 18 games this season, Mikkola - who made his NHL debut in January 2020 - has already matched his career high with three goals. The Bruins led that series 3-1 before Florida won the next two and then took Game 7 in overtime. The Florida Panthers started the season without Sam Bennett, and they are bracing to be without him once again. (AP) — More Virginia Democrats on Tuesday cast the controversy surrounding a legislative candidate who livestreamed herself performing sex acts as a distraction from the stakes in this fall's elections, while stopping short of fully championing her continued campaign. Virginia Democrats, Gibson among them, have made protecting abortion access a top campaign priority. Gibson's campaign did not respond to an interview request or a detailed list of questions from the AP on Tuesday. The state party also maintained its silence on Tuesday, with spokesperson Liam Watson declining to comment. Among elected officials, Democratic state Sen. CNN —Tortilla chip brand Paqui says it is voluntarily removing its ultra-spicy “One Chip Challenge” from shelves after a Massachusetts family claims their 14-year-old son may have died from complications from the challenge. Authorities have not confirmed or commented on whether consumption of the chips caused the teen’s death. Paqui did not respond to a request for comment from CNN. The “challenge” chip contains seasoning from a Carolina Reaper Pepper and a Naga Viper Pepper, according to Paqui’s website. The challenge includes eating a singular spicy chip, which is sold in coffin-shaped packaging and turns participants’ tongues blue.
