LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Nevada Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a defamation lawsuit brought by casino mogul Steve Wynn against The Associated Press over a story about two women’s accounts to police alleging he engaged in sexual misconduct. The court cited state anti-SLAPP law in rejecting Wynn's claim that he was defamed in the February 2018 AP article, which cited police documents. SLAPP, or strategic lawsuits against public participation, refers to court filings made to intimidate or silence critics. The court ordered new maps with contiguous districts, but also said the maps must not favor one party over another. Following Friday's map submissions, a pair of consultants hired by the Supreme Court will analyze the proposals and issue a report by Feb. 1. The consultants could choose to ignore all of the maps submitted last week and put forward their own plan. The 50-49 Republican majority map was submitted by Law Forward, the Madison-based law firm representing Democratic voters that brought the lawsuit. Republicans have indicated that they plan an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court arguing due process violations, but it's not clear when that would occur.

(AP) — A Missouri judge has upheld the constitutionality of the state's Senate districts in a case that provided the first legal test of revised redistricting criteria approved by voters. Cole County Circuit Judge Jon Beetem rejected claims that the Senate map unlawfully divided certain local governments into multiple Senate districts, but an attorney said Wednesday that his clients are considering an appeal. In Missouri, two separate bipartisan citizen commissions are supposed to redraw state House and Senate districts after each census to account for population changes. Hatfield said he doesn't believe the constitutional criteria make it OK to split a county into multiple districts when it could be kept whole. The Senate districts were defended in court by Attorney General Andrew Bailey's office.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Quinn Ewers finished what he started last season, passing for 349 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 11 Texas to a 34-24 victory over third-ranked Alabama on Saturday night in a huge win for a program trying to climb back into national championship contention. This amounted to a welcome-to-the-Southeastern Conference moment for a program set to join Alabama & Co. next season. Alabama had its 21-game home winning streak snapped along with a 57-game regular-season binge against nonconference teams dating to Nick Saban's debut season, 2007. Alabama's Jalen Milroe delivered big plays passing and running, but also was picked off twice on bad decisions.

A white father and son have been indicted by a grand jury on multiple charges, including attempted murder, 10 months after a Black FedEx driver alleged he was chased and shot at after dropping off a package in a Mississippi city. The population of Brookhaven is about 59% Black and 39% white, according to the most recent census data. Gregory Case was originally arrested in February on investigation of conspiracy and Brandon Case on suspicion of aggravated assault. As he was leaving, he said, a man in a white pickup truck began following him closely while honking his horn. The white men — including a father and son — were convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Former President Barack Obama campaigned for John Fetterman in Pennsylvania on Saturday. He said if Oz would "peddle snake oil" to make money, then he'd do it to get elected. Obama was in Pittsburgh campaigning for Oz's Democratic opponent, Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. "If somebody is willing to peddle snake oil to make a buck, then he's probably willing to sell snake oil to get elected," Obama said. Obama was campaigning for Fetterman — whose speech has been impacted by a stroke he had in May — ahead of the election on Tuesday.
