Frontier Airlines planes are parked at gates in Denver International Airport (DEN) in Denver, Colorado, on August 5, 2023. Frontier Airlines , one of the world's biggest budget airlines, is adding first-class seats. Starting in September, Frontier plans to start ripping out the first two rows of its three-by-three economy seats to add four first-class seats, in a two-by-two configuration. "While we have the lowest costs in the industry, we don't have the best revenue model," Biffle said in an interview. Biffle said the company's biggest gaps in its revenue model came from not offering first-class seats and not having enough rewards for its loyalty program members.

CNN —Frontier Airlines is the latest no-frills carrier getting into the premium seating game — with what it’s referring to as “first class-style” seats. The latest move by Frontier is another sign of the difficulty budget airlines have had making money on no-frills tickets. Frontier’s new premium seating announcement comes alongside other changes the carrier is implementing as part of a multi-pronged overhaul it is calling The New Frontier. Loyalty customers will be able to upgrade into the new premium seats, the airline said. Several bundled seating options already exist on Frontier.

My tween son, however, groaned. AdvertisementMy son and I both appreciate the amenities that come with flight upgrades. For me, choosing to pay more for flight upgrades my tween will enjoy is no different from when I splurged on pricey trips to Disney parks when he was little. If travel upgrades leave my family feeling well-rested and ready for adventure when we land, then investing in them is just as valuable as the excursions we book at our destination. So, even if traveling in style is spoiling my tween, I'll continue to upgrade us whenever it's within our budget.

New single-aisle planes offer cost efficiency, smaller capacity, and flexible cabins. This evolution has been largely propelled by the Airbus A321neo family, smaller planes that can flyer further than previous single-aisle aircraft. Are Airline Loyalty Programs Worth It?

When SuzAnn Brantner moved to Indiana from Los Angeles during the coronavirus pandemic, she had been a longtime Delta Air Lines frequent flier, achieving the highest loyalty status the airline offered: Diamond Medallion. “I just always loved Delta,” Ms. Brantner, a 50-year-old marketing executive, said. She traveled every month because of her job and made sure to book all her flights with Delta — even if she had to make a connection and other airlines offered a direct flight. But last year, when Delta announced it would be making modifications to its frequent-flier program, Ms. Brantner began to question her loyalty. On Reddit communities dedicated to three major domestic carriers — Delta, United Airlines and American Airlines — some users are wondering whether maintaining airline loyalty status is worth it anymore as they calculate how much they will need to spend and travel for the rest of the year in order to reach certain status levels next year.

A Delta flight attendant slashed a co-worker and hotel security guard after a late night and early morning of heavy, “blacked out” drinking, officials said Wednesday. Smith and “several other coworkers were returning to their” riverfront hotel when he started bickering with the victim, New Orleans police said in a statement. While Smith was booked for attempted murder, defense lawyer Thomas Calogero said his client shouldn’t be charged with that alleged crime once the case reaches prosecutors. Calogero said he highly doubts his client will ever be able to work as a flight attendant again. I mean I’m sure he’s going to lose his job at Delta,” the lawyer said.

While richer people are expanding their footprint in the holiday travel mix, lower-paid ones are shrinking theirs: Households making under $50,000 are set to make up just 23% of travelers, down from 28% a year ago, Deloitte found. Indeed, the luxury travel network Virtuoso said it’s seen seasonal bookings surge 37% since last year among its high-end clientele. Some 64% of Americans plan to take more than one trip this holiday season, Deloitte found, up from 57% in 2023. “These travel choices may suggest that people are looking to save money, likely choosing cheaper options to keep their travel costs down,” the researchers wrote. Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst for Bankrate, said there are signs that “inflation continues to strain holiday travelers in a big way.” The consumer finance company found 86% of households making less than $100,000 annually expect to change their holiday travel plans due to cost increases (although a hefty 77% of six-figure earners said the same).

EasyJet on Tuesday said it made a record £3.59 billion ($4.5 billion) from charging passengers for flight add-ons such as extra baggage in the full year to October, as the budget airline's CEO criticized a recent Spanish fine over the practice. Many airlines have stripped back what they include in their flight fares in recent years, instead relying on cashing in more from individual add-ons, as competition to offer ultra-low cost base fares intensifies. "We completely disagree with that, we think it goes completely against European law and European law's going to trump that," easyJet CEO Johan Lundgren told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" on Tuesday. "It's a highly unfair idea that you should not be able to offer products and services targeted for those people who want to use that. Spain's Association of Airlines (ALA), Ryanair, Norwegian and easyJet last week all criticized the fines and said they would dispute them.
