That’s why Trump, who closely follows the stock market and obsessed over it as president, should be nervous about the recent trend on Wall Street. If the market goes down, the incumbent party gets replaced,” Stovall told CNN in a phone interview Monday. Market indicator was right in 2016 and 2020Vice President Kamala Harris should feel relieved the market has seen solid gains. In 2016, the S&P 500 dipped 2.2% in the lead-up to Trump’s matchup with the Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton. Yet there’s another market indicator that offers a reason for hope for the Harris camp.

Longtime value investor Bill Nygren warned that the popular benchmark S & P 500 is not as diversified as it used to be, and he is picking cheap stocks outside the dominant tech sector. Nygren, portfolio manager at Oakmark Funds for 40 years, said the technology sector has grown so powerful in the S & P 500 that the 25 or so largest names make up about half the investment. "It's not nearly as diversified as investors think it is. I think we will see investors revisit the idea of the S & P 500 being kind of the low-risk way to invest in equities," Nygren said on CNBC's " Money Movers " on Monday. "It's become so important to us that we invest with companies that are taking matters into their own hands and using excess capital to repurchase their own stock," Nygren said.

The insurance industry is bracing for a likely tough hurricane season as Beryl struck the coast of Texas early Monday. Wall Street analysts identified several insurance stocks with the most at risk from future dangerous storms. The intensity and timing of Beryl served as an ominous sign that this hurricane season could be an active one, analysts said. "Hurricane Beryl was the earliest CAT-5 Hurricane on record over the past 100 years, confirming that 2024 Hurricane Season will be an active one, in our view," Morgan Stanley analyst Bob Jian Huang said in a note to clients. Stocks with the most exposure Insurance stocks typically fall as a hurricane makes landfall and often rebound after the size of the insured losses become known.

Cyber insurance has become "a very fashionable product," Jain said at the annual meeting. Shokrai says categorizing how to attribute an event is the topic of much debate between insurance companies. "That is a big debate between insurance companies; it is an important distinction that needs clarity," Shokrai said. "I will tell you that most people want to be in anything that's fashionable when they write insurance. Plenty of companies are reining in their rhetoric and in some cases action on issues such as sustainability and diversity. Over the past decade, many corporations have at least professed to take a more active role in social issues, under pressure from their customers and, more importantly, employees. After last year's Bud Light debacle, which was a real blow to its business, executives fear they'll be the next target of some anti-woke outcry. For the fourth quarter of 2020, 131 companies mentioned ESG, and 34 mentioned DEI or diversity and inclusion. This may be a great un-wokening, but maybe corporate America was actually never that committed to the idea in the first place.

Consistently beating the competition over a decade and a half is a sign that Bill Nygren is worth listening to. NAPLES, Fla. Lagos, Nigeria CNN —Nigeria’s Lagos state marked a historic moment by making Africa’s inaugural appearance at the renowned Lord Mayor’s Show in London – an annual procession, steeped in 800 years of tradition, that celebrates the history and commerce of the city. Among the Lagos contingent were the traditional Eyo masquerades who take part in the famed Yoruba Eyo festival in the state. However, many backers believe that Lagos has the potential to evolve into a global financial hub capable of drawing substantial foreign investments into Nigeria. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, co-chair of the newly inaugurated Lagos International Financial Centre Council (LIFC) told CNN Lagos was now ready to position itself with global players. “A low stable inflation rate automatically signals a stable currency … and that’s the job half done,” he told CNN.

Despite the U.S. Treasury forecasting a lower fourth-quarter borrowing need than previously flagged, the tension in the bond market remains ahead of its detailed future refinancing plans due later on Wednesday. With the Federal Reserve widely expected to hold policy rates steady again on Wednesday, the Treasury plans may end up getting more bond market attention. But U.S. consumer confidence has softened, oil prices are falling again and the overseas demand picture is weakening. Another heavy day of U.S. corporate earnings is topped by big insurers and the likes of PayPal and Kraft Heinz. On Tuesday, shares in heavy-machinery maker Caterpillar (CAT.N) sank almost 7% as signs of slowing demand overshadowed a quarterly earnings beat.
