Social Security may not be able to pay full retirement benefits as soon as 2033, based on current projections from the program's trustees. If Congress doesn't move to fix the situation by that date, the general expectation is that millions of retirees could see a 21% across-the-board benefit cut. The effects of that lost income could be enough to prompt a retirement crisis, since it would double the elderly poverty rate and reduce median senior household income by nearly 14%, according to new research from the American Enterprise Institute. Yet those broad benefit cuts would not necessarily have to happen, as the worst effects of insolvency could be prevented by executive action, according to the report. "It means big cuts on very rich people, but it avoids what you might think of as a retirement crisis, where everything is thrown into upheaval," Biggs said.

CNN —All signs suggest that the partisan divide over changing gender roles in society could widen even further in the 2024 election, adding a new source of uncertainty to a contest already on a knife’s edge. That was only the latest example of his campaign signaling its support for traditional gender roles. “The messaging on gender coming out of the campaign broadly is very much about reaffirming traditional roles for women and for men,” Cassese said. In PRRI polling this year, nearly half of Republicans agreed with two absolutist statements about gender roles. His problem is that most voters outside the core GOP coalition are generally comfortable with the changes in gender roles and family dynamics since the “Father Knows Best” era in the 1950s.

While it waits to amass the ammunition, manpower, and resources to launch a large-scale, well-timed counteroffensive, Ukraine should experiment with ways to take the initiative and gain momentum, war analysts say. "Ukrainian forces," they argued, "are very unlikely to be able to initiate significant counteroffensive operations in 2024 and into 2025." Such a strategy isn't necessarily new for Ukraine, which has repeatedly found ways to deal unexpected blows to Russian forces despite a grueling ground fight. "It will also protract the war and dramatically increase its costs to Ukraine and to Ukraine's supporters," they said. "Ukraine should thus seek every possible way of restoring maneuver to this war as soon as possible, daunting though that task appears."

Desmond Lachman, a former IMF deputy director, says there are "plenty of reasons to worry" about the US economy in the months ahead. Another risk is the prospect of a second Trump presidency, given his proposed policies around tariffs and taxes, Lachman said. Advertisement"There are a huge number of risks," Lachman said. "The Fed could cut interest rates midmeeting but that would be because the sky was falling. But if the sky is not falling, the Fed doesn't want to give the impression that the sky is falling," Lachman said.

In 2013, the share of self-identified liberals among young women exceeded the share among young men by 5 percentage points; by 2023, that gap was nearly four times as large. (In that survey, young men were substantially more likely than young women to say they rely on YouTube as a major source of news.) (In the Harvard poll, one-fourth of young women identified in some way as LGBTQ, more than double the share of young men.) “He’s got to make up for the defection of young men by winning young women by more, and he’s got to get every young woman he can out to vote,” said Lake, the Democratic pollster. Biden’s best hope of avoiding a catastrophic decline in his youth support is that the number of young women Trump repels exceeds the number of young men he attracts.

Defense experts say that an aggressive Chinese coercion campaign, short of war but still threatening, is more likely than a full-scale invasion and the US needs to prepare for such an event. Economic and diplomatic pressure is notable, and Chinese misinformation operations and the potential to slowly set up a blockade of Taiwan are also concerns. A new report says China's $229 billion military budget in 2022 was actually equivalent to $711 billion. AdvertisementIn June 2023, Sen. Dan Sullivan of Alaska warned Congress that China's military was catching up to America's faster than previously imagined. That makes Beijing's spending in 2022 "nearly equal" to the US defense budget of about $740 billion that year, wrote Eaglen, a senior fellow at AEI. Using that factor, Eaglen wrote that it's highly likely China's spending on personnel that year was worth $293 billion of US military spending. US military spending is also often cited as higher than the actual defense budget.

AdvertisementSix experts on hostage-negotiation efforts, who spoke to Business Insider, explained how Hamas might have been able to allow hostages to go missing in Gaza. "You've got to appreciate that there's lots of confusion, with the fact that Gaza is essentially a warzone," he told Business Insider. Hamas rounded up a lot of hostages on October 7, and Gaza quickly found itself in a state of chaos amid Israeli retaliatory strikes. All of the aboveFor Chris White, the co-founder of Negotiation Global, who has experience of hostage negotiations in Gaza, hostages going missing could be plausibly explained by all of the above explanations. A satellite image of the Al Shifa hospital complex is annotated to show parts of the hospital, including a maternity department, a dialysis unit, a surgery and a morgue. Al Shifa hospital in Gaza City has become the main target of the Israeli ground operation in northern Gaza. Israeli forces say the hospital sits atop tunnels housing a headquarters for the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas whose fighters are using patients as shields, a claim which Hamas denies. A map shows the location of the Al Shifa Hospital complex in Gaza. The IDF said its operation in Al Shifa was “precise and targeted” in a “specified area” of the hospital.

A map of northern Gaza shows the extent of Israeli forces’s invasion of the Gaza Strip. South of Gaza City, Israeli forces have cut a line from Gaza’s eastern border to the Mediterranean Sea in the west, effectively cutting off northern Gaza and encircling Gaza City. Israel’s armed forces have encircled Gaza City — the largest city in the Gaza Strip — in their assault on Hamas, the military said. Maps distributed by the IDF have directed Gazans to different areas of the southern part of the Gaza Strip. Pamphlets dropped in Gaza on Oct. 13 directed people to evacuate south of the Wadi Gaza, a coastal wetland in central Gaza.

After over three weeks of heavy air strikes, Israeli ground forces have entered Gaza. A map of the northern part of the Gaza Strip shows Israeli forces ground incursions at two places along the northern border and one place along the eastern border, just south of Gaza City. 3 Cutting off Gaza City from the southAlthough the military has refused to say exactly where troops are operating, images on social media appear to show Israeli tanks on the road south of Gaza City. This line may threaten Salah Ad Deen Road, the main transport artery that runs the length of the Gaza Strip. Cutting it off would effectively split Gaza in two and isolate Gaza City from the south.
