Republican senators who met Monday with Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary, brushed aside sexual assault and other allegations against him. Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., called the allegations a “side issue” while lauding Hegseth’s ability to lead the Defense Department. Hegseth did not respond to shouted questions from NBC News about the New Yorker article and other allegations. Senators offered their full-throated support to Hegseth after the meeting, downplaying the accusations. The Trump transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Republican senators' remarks.

The sweeping pardon means Hunter Biden won’t face any punishment for criminal convictions in two separate cases, one involving gun charges, the other tax evasion. “They took a gamble that didn’t play out as they hoped,” former Justice Department spokesman Anthony Coley said. If he follows through, Trump may try to blunt the fallout by invoking the Biden pardon. “Joe Biden's pardon of Hunter Biden proves President Trump's signature campaign promise to end the weaponization of our justice system needs to happen,” she said, adding: “President Trump has made that promise. A judge has already ruled there is no merit to the idea that Hunter Biden is a victim of selective prosecution.

As the summer of 2023 ended, the justices of the U.S. Supreme Court began trading even-more-confidential-than-usual memos, avoiding their standard email list and instead passing paper documents in envelopes to each chambers. Faced with ethics controversies and a plunge in public trust, they were debating rules for their own conduct, according to people familiar with the process. But a New York Times examination found that behind the scenes, the court had divided over whether the justices’ new rules could — or should — ever be enforced. Justice Gorsuch was especially vocal in opposing any enforcement mechanism beyond voluntary compliance, arguing that additional measures could undermine the court. The justices’ strength was their independence, he said, and he vowed to have no part in diminishing it.

AdvertisementNew York City is on the verge of legalizing accessory dwelling units in much of the city. The effort is part of the mayor's "City of Yes" housing plan, designed to boost the supply of homes. More than a dozen states across the country have legalized ADUs in recent years, and New York State greenlit the secondary units in 2022, although New York City has restricted them. Last year, New York City rolled out a pilot program that awarded 15 homeowners with up to nearly $400,000 in funding per household to build an extra dwelling in their backyard, basement, or attic. Another Republican council member opposed to City of Yes derided ADUs as backyard "treehouses" that would depress home values.

Since the early months of the war in Gaza, Israeli forces have occupied a four-mile road, known as the Netzarim corridor, that bisects the enclave, to keep hundreds of thousands of displaced Gazans from returning north. That has slowly grown into an 18-square-mile block of territory controlled by Israeli forces, according to the Israeli military and a New York Times analysis of satellite images and video footage. The buildup suggests a shift for Israel, which had largely avoided holding Gazan territory, creating a vacuum that has allowed Hamas to reassert control in some parts of Gaza. Israelis leaders have vowed to maintain security control in Gaza even after the war, without saying clearly what that might entail. Israeli military analysts say the increase in infrastructure along the Netzarim corridor might serve that purpose.

The debate has grown most intense in recent days as dozens of Democrats have been privately pressing Representative Jamie Raskin of Maryland to challenge Representative Jerrold Nadler of New York for his position as the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee. They are doing so out of concern that Mr. Nadler will be ineffective in pushing back against any efforts by Mr. Trump to abuse his power. Mr. Nadler, 77, the dean of New York’s congressional delegation, has made it clear he has no plans to step aside. And while Mr. Raskin, 61, is mulling a challenge, he has not yet decided whether to pursue one, according to colleagues familiar with his thinking who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the matter. “As a New Yorker, I have stood up to Donald Trump my entire career,” Mr. Nadler wrote in a letter to colleagues announcing his run for re-election to the post, in which he emphasized his history of going after Mr. Trump.

During the 1930s, the site was a dive bar and restaurant called Bonnie’s Stonewall Inn, which shuttered in 1954. Three years later, the Genovese crime family reopened the bar, retaining the Stonewall sign and name. Gay bars were mostly mob-run back then because of laws against homosexual behavior in public. No one was talking about landmarking Stonewall then, but the city’s designation of the Village helped forestall various proposals to raze the building. Then in 2000 Stonewall was named a National Historic Landmark, and in 2015, designated a New York City Landmark.

Maps Pinpoint Where Democrats Lost Ground Since 2020 in 11 Big Cities A Times analysis shows where Kamala Harris got fewer votes compared with Joseph R. Biden Jr. and which voting blocs drove each city’s red shift. But she ended up doing worse in urban America — getting 15 percent fewer votes than Mr. Biden in some cities. She picked up just 127,000 votes in Mexican and Puerto Rican neighborhoods, 47,000 fewer than Mr. Biden earned in 2020. Mr. Trump made small gains across the board, but Ms. Harris’s losses were much steeper. While Ms. Harris matched Mr. Biden’s vote total overall, Mr. Trump made significant gains throughout the area.

Several of President-elect Donald Trump's planned Cabinet nominees and administration appointees were subjected to bomb threats and "swatting" attacks Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, a spokesperson for the Trump transition team said. These attacks ranged from bomb threats to ‘swatting,’" transition spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. Three senior law enforcement officials briefed on the swatting incident involving multiple Trump allies told NBC News that these were not credible threats. The FBI said in a statement it “is aware of numerous bomb threats and swatting incidents targeting incoming administration nominees and appointees, and we are working with our law enforcement partners. An appeals court on Tuesday agreed to dismiss charges related to Donald Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents, effectively ending Special Counsel Jack Smith's prosecution of Trump. A spokesperson for Smith’s office declined to comment. Federal prosecutors in August had asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit to restore the case. The two remaining criminal cases, the New York case involving hush money payments and a Georgia election interference case, are also in limbo. A New York judge ruled last week postponed Trump's sentencing in that case which was previously scheduled for Nov. 26.

“IT HAS THE spirit of a loft,” says the interior designer Martin Brûlé, surveying the apartment that inhabits an entire floor of the Sherry-Netherland, the 38-story Jazz Age Fifth Avenue co-op and hotel overlooking Central Park at 59th Street. “The stereotype of a New York loft is that it’s downtown with this artsy feeling, mismatched furniture. Well, this space has all those elements. Brûlé has since transformed the 11,000 square feet, which once housed the hotel’s barbershop, gym and several offices, into a wildly imaginative and distinctively uptown version of open-plan living. A sensuous lounge and screening room lead to a celestial primary suite and an adjoining boudoir on the north side.

Human remains were found submerged in a Georgia pond inside a vehicle similar to the one that belonged to a New York Couple who disappeared in 1980, authorities announced. One human bone was discovered in the submerged Lincoln Continental on Friday, according to a Saturday statement from the Glynn County Police Department. “The vehicle is similar to the description of a vehicle that Charles and Catherine Romer were believed to be driving when reported missing in April, 1980,” the police department said in a Facebook post. Law enforcement back then expressed concerns about potential foul play against the couple from Scarsdale, New York, partly because Catherine Romer was wearing about $81,000 worth of jewelry.
