This was, for the most part, a dismal England performance, regardless of the supernatural deliverance at the end. Everything that was bad about today in Gelsenkirchen had been signposted by England over the course of the last few weeks. The red flags had all been there since England opened their campaign in this same city two weeks ago. And yes, England are desperately flawed, still unbalanced, still uncertain on the ball, still struggling to create chances even when they dominate possession. None of the lingering questions over this England team have been solved.

Lightning stops playAfter several days of hot weather, the skies above Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park had been gathering throughout the evening. Thunder and lightning could be heard from afar, with the rain arriving after 32 minutes of Germany’s last-16 game against Denmark. Soon after, lightning flashes could be seen from inside the stadium, with two to three ear-splitting cracks of thunder. The suspension lasted for around 24 minutes — with preparations to restart occurring as soon as the lighting had moved out of the area. Players reemerged from their changing rooms five minutes before the resumption, and waited momentarily for groundstaff to test the pitch.

Turkey held their nerve in their final group game in Hamburg to beat the Czech Republic and reach the Euro 2024 knockout stages. A red card produced by Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs after 20 minutes — the quickest in Euros history — curtailed a promising start from the Czechs. The action started in the 11th minute when Antonin Barak was handed a yellow card for a pull on Ferdi Kadioglu. And he was awarded a second yellow, and his marching orders, under 10 minutes later. Portugal’s blushes were spared as they came from behind to earn victory over the Czech Republic in their opening match at Euro 2024. Another day at Euro 2024, another trio of goalscoring games — even if the entertainment factor dipped off at points. The Netherlands overcame Poland with a 2-1 win, Denmark were held to a 1-1 draw by Slovenia, while England beat Serbia 1-0. But the goals, a lack of shots in one game and the results don’t tell the whole story of the day. “What you’re talking about is a situation, or potential situation, where in American terms, the United States’ Supreme Court would take a constitutional amendment and say that it’s unconstitutional. The law, which would limit the power of Israel’s Supreme Court, is an amendment to one of Israel’s Basic Laws, which exist in place of a formal constitution. CNN —A blistering and deadly heat wave in Italy this week could break records, with temperatures predicted to soar past 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) in some parts of the country. The warning comes on the heels of a report published in Nature on Monday, which found that last year’s heat wave killed 61,672 people in Europe. The heat wave is also affecting other European countries including France, Germany and Spain. This heat wave follows another one in Spain in April, which saw temperatures soar to 38.8 degrees Celsius, smashing the previous national monthly record. Scientists found that this heat wave – which also affected Portugal, Morocco and Algeria – was made 100 times more likely by the human-caused climate crisis.
