WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday rejected disbarred lawyer Michael Cohen’s last-ditch effort to revive a civil rights claim against his former boss Donald Trump. But constitutional claims against individual federal officials are notoriously difficult to bring as a result of a line of Supreme Court rulings. In a 2022 case called Egbert v. Boule, the Supreme Court effectively put “Bivens claims” on life support in a ruling that tossed out allegations against a Border Patrol agent. A federal judge in New York and the 2nd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals both highlighted the Supreme Court’s recent ruling in throwing out Cohen’s claims. Unless Congress passes legislation to allow a form of Bivens claims, there are few legal avenues to seeking accountability when federal officials, including thousands of law enforcement officials, commit unlawful acts.

Sean "Diddy" Combs wants to go to trial on sex trafficking charges next spring, the embattled hip-hop mogul's lawyers informed a judge Wednesday. "Mr. Combs continues to assert his right to a speedy trial and intends to request a trial date in April or May 2025, and as consistent with the Court’s trial schedule," the jailed rapper's lawyers wrote. Combs was charged last month with sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution in a sweeping indictment by the Southern District of New York. Combs' preference was mentioned in a joint letter from his lawyers and prosecutors. In the joint letter, U.S. government prosecutors said they have started submitting to defense lawyers some of the "voluminous" evidence in the case, including "several terabytes of electronic material" regarding Combs.

The crypto industry is in a tug-of-war with the SEC and its Democratic chair Gary Gensler, who has described the crypto market as a "Wild West" riddled with fraud. That effort, if it had been approved, would have killed Carroll's lawsuit because the government can shield itself from civil liability under the doctrine of sovereign immunity. Genius, formerly known as Rap Genius, maintains a vast database of song lyrics. "We license lyrics on Google Search from third parties, and we do not crawl or scrape websites to source lyrics," Castaneda added. The Genius lawsuit stated that one of the first Google posts it suspected as copying involved the lyrics for the song "Panda" by the rapper Desiigner. "I got broads in Atlanta," part of the song's lyrics read. Jean Carroll in the 1990s and defamed her decades later, a court filing Friday revealed. After a trial in May, a jury found that Trump, 77, was liable for sexually abusing Carroll — but not for raping her. Trump has asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit to overturn the verdict.
