After 125 years of making soda, Pepsi has expanded its culinary offerings. This weekend, the soft drink giant unveiled the Pepsi 125 Diner, a limited-time pop up in New York City, where guests will be able to take a trip through the brand's history and enjoy a three-course meal of Pepsi-infused foods. Tickets cost $50 per person and include the three-course meal, unlimited soft drinks as well as live Pepsi-themed trivia during the two-hour engagement. There will be two seatings each day, at 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., and guests will be able to buy Pepsi cocktails and mocktails for an additional charge. Bobby Schiffman, who guided the Apollo Theater in Harlem through the seismic cultural and musical changes of the 1960s and early ’70s, cementing its place as a world-renowned showcase for Black music and entertainment, died on Sept. 6 at his home in Boynton Beach, Fla. In 1961, Mr. Schiffman inherited the reins of the storied neoclassical Apollo Theater on West 125th Street in Manhattan from his father, Frank Schiffman. The elder Mr. Schiffman, along with a financial partner, Leo Brecher, had taken over the theater — a former burlesque house that opened in 1914 as a whites-only establishment — in 1935. During the 1930s and ’40s, the elder Mr. Schiffman provided early exposure to countless African American luminaries, including Count Basie, Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington. “In Harlem show business circles he was God — a five-foot-nine-inch, white, Jewish, balding, bespectacled deity,” the music writer Ted Fox observed in his 1983 book, “Showtime at the Apollo.”

The pathway I was walking on was next to a fenced-in basketball court where some children were shooting hoops while others watched. A girl who looked to be 10 or 11 was sitting at the base of the fence with her back to me as I approached and then passed her. All of a sudden, she started to jerk her head from left to right and back while fanning her ears. As she was making these motions, she looked over her shoulder toward me and discovered where the buzzing sound was coming from.

A Japanese city learned the hard way this week how very wrong they were, after prompting national outrage over flyers that tried to do just that. Onomichi city, in Japan’s Hiroshima prefecture, conducted a public survey in 2017 that was used to create flyers for pregnant women later distributed to local residents, according to the city government’s website. “There are differences in the way men and women feel and think,” one flyer reads. “One of the reasons for this is the structural difference in the brains of men and women. Meanwhile, structural issues still prevent many working men and women from balancing careers with family life, with mothers often sacrificing their jobs to care for their children.
