Both sides have employed decoys throughout the war, attempting to waste enemy fire or force the enemy to expose itself. One of the realistic mock-ups may have tricked Russia into wasting a missile on it, highlighting the role decoys play in the war. According to a Telegram post from Insider UA, a Ukrainian news outlet, Russia had launched an Iskander ballistic missile at the IRIS-T system. Back in December, Ukraine got Russia to expend a munition on what looked like a fake Su-25 ground-attack aircraft. In September 2023, Ukraine's 116th Mechanized Brigade published a video of an inflatable Russian T-72 decoy.

Yugoslav forces in the Kosovo War faced similar struggles trying different tricks to fool NATO jets. The drone's operator seemed to notice the tanks were not real, zooming in on the puffy tanks in the video. Outgunned by superior NATO airpower, Yugoslav forces took extra steps to try to make their fakes convincing. Even trays of water, also heated by sunlight, were placed inside the fake tanks to give the impression the tank was crewed, running, and operational.

A "decoy arms race" is underway, a war expert told Insider, as technology pushes both sides to make their fakes appear as real as possible to fool the enemy. Decoy Ukrainian radar reflectors made from cut-up oil barrels, too, have drawn Russian fire. Earlier this year, Ukraine reported sightings of Russian inflatable tanks deployed near Zaporizhzhia, but it noted some seemed deflated.
