Tesla shares jumped on Monday following a report that President-elect Donald Trump's transition team are planning to make a federal framework to regulate self-driving vehicles a top priority for the U.S. Transport Department. CNBC could not independently verify the report and has requested comment from the Trump team and from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a Transportation Department unit tasked to oversee self-driving technologies. Full Self-Driving, or FSD, is Tesla's premium driver assistance system, currently available in a "supervised" version for Tesla electric vehicles. The U.S. Transportation Department announced a $50 million fine Wednesday against American Airlines over allegations it mistreated passengers with disabilities, which the department said in some cases caused injuries. “They repeatedly failed to provide prompt wheelchair assistance, and they damaged thousands of passengers’ wheelchairs, which left passengers without the device they need to live their life fully,” he said. American Airlines may not be alone in violations of laws that protect travelers with disabilities. WASHINGTON, June 14 (Reuters) - The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said on Wednesday it is requiring that new passenger airplanes have a secondary barrier to the flight deck to prevent intrusions. The final rule, which was first proposed in July, requires aircraft manufacturers to install a second physical barrier on planes used in commercial passenger service in the United States. The FAA said the additional barrier will protect flight decks from intrusion when the flight deck door is open. After the hijacking of four U.S. airplanes on Sept. 11, 2001, the FAA adopted standards for flight deck security to make them resistant to forcible intrusion and unauthorized entry. The FAA in 2007 set rules to address flight deck security when the cockpit door was opened, including requiring the door be locked when the airplane is in operation, unless necessary to open it to permit access by authorized persons.

WASHINGTON, May 4 (Reuters) - The U.S. trade deficit narrowed sharply in March as exports increased, which could position trade to continue contributing to economic growth in the second quarter. The trade deficit contracted 9.1% to $64.2 billion, the Commerce Department said on Thursday. But consumer goods imports increased $2.4 billion, lifted by pharmaceutical preparations, other textile apparel and household goods. Adjusting for inflation, the goods trade deficit narrowed 4.4% to $99.4 billion. A smaller trade deficit was one of the contributors to the economy's 1.1% annualized growth rate in the first quarter.

Buttigieg told airlines on a call the department does not plan to extend the deadline and urged them to work aggressively to continue retrofitting airplanes. Last year, Verizon (VZ.N) and AT&T (T.N) voluntarily agreed to delay some C-Band 5G usage until July 1 as air carriers worked to retrofit airplane altimeters. Separately, the FAA on Tuesday proposed seven airworthiness directives (ADs) for many Boeing (BA.N) aircraft due to the potential for 5G C-band interference. They require revising aircraft flight manuals by June 30 to prohibit some landings and include specific operating procedures for calculating landing distances and certain approaches when in the presence of 5G C-band interference.
