This began the deployment of Task Force Smith, the first American combat troops to arrive and fight in the Korean War. It was Soviet leader Josef Stalin himself who reluctantly gave the go ahead to North Korean dictator Kim Il-Sung to invade. Task Force Smith suffered its heaviest casualties during the retreat, with enemy machine gun positions hitting them from close range. After American and UN reinforcements arrived, a counteroffensive drove the North Korean military to the brink of collapse.

Vladimir Putin has spent his two decades in power rebuilding and reforming Russia's military. Below, Galeotti describes those reforms, what they achieved, and how, in a devastating war in Ukraine, Putin has squandered the military he built.

They stroll in the Luxembourg Gardens, they go to a party, they gossip, and we overhear their private reflections. Like writers, ideas have their eras, as undeniable at showing their vintage as gray hair and wrinkles. D’Ardelo, who has just heard from his doctor that his medical tests are negative, nevertheless tells the others that he has cancer. Elsewhere, “On woman’s erotic body there are certain golden sites: I always thought there were three such: the thighs, the buttocks, the breasts. golden sites represents an erotic message.” But these are messages a novelist would not put in the mouth of a modern male character unless he was trying to characterize him as an irredeemable sexist.

‘Peter and the Wolf’ Review: Bono Meets Prokofiev

A still from ‘Peter and the Wolf’ Photo: MaxRussian composer Sergei Prokofiev passed away on March 5, 1953, an event that received very little news coverage— Joseph Stalin decided to die on the very same date. Stalin not only hijacked Prokofiev’s death day, he made the last years of the composer’s life (and the entire Soviet Union, one might argue) impossible, thus casting Prokofiev’s decision to return home, after years abroad, as one of the classical music world’s great unforced errors.
