“Joe Biden should be ashamed of himself, if he knows what he’s even doing,” Trump said from the garbage truck. Former President Donald Trump held a press conference from inside a garbage truck at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport on Wednesday. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-California, attended the Harris rally after stumping on the trail with Baldwin. He sidestepped a question about Biden’s remarks on Tuesday and Trump’s garbage truck gag response, saying he wasn’t focused on the matter. But to Harris supporters, Trump’s outrage over Biden’s comments rang hollow.

Democrats’ rebellion against President Biden intensified on Wednesday with the party’s congressional leaders lobbying successfully to delay his nomination by a week, prolonging the debate over the viability of his candidacy. The maneuver came as Representative Adam B. Schiff of California became the highest-profile Democratic lawmaker to call on Mr. Biden to end his run. More details have emerged of heated conversations the president has held with lawmakers in which he has angrily pushed back on their entreaties for him to drop out of the race. Mr. Biden’s disastrous debate performance last month, his uneven public appearances and his struggles in the polls have fueled deep worries within his party. Congressional Democrats have also warned that Mr. Biden’s sagging political standing will make it far harder for them to win critical House and Senate races in November.

Adam Schiff on Wednesday urged President Joe Biden to exit the 2024 presidential election contest. Schiff in a statement said that he had "serious concerns about whether the President can defeat Donald Trump in November." A source familiar with Pelosi told CNBC on Wednesday that Schiff's statement was "news to her" and that he "did not consult her before." Politico on Tuesday reported that Pelosi has offered to talk to members of Congress who wanted to discuss their concerns about having Biden as the Democratic nominee.

What might have been surprising was which party would fit which role. Even as Republicans meeting in Milwaukee put on a show of unity for former President Donald J. Trump, Democrats are still stewing over President Biden’s insistence on staying in the race and in some cases even plotting how to press him to step aside. The assassination attempt against Mr. Trump last weekend diverted attention from the Democratic discord but did not solve the problem. Indeed, many Democrats are just as convinced as ever that Mr. Biden cannot beat Mr. Trump and should step aside in favor of a candidate who might have a better chance. Mr. Schiff’s decision was especially noteworthy because he is a close ally of former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Rep. Adam Schiff calls on Biden to drop out of the race

CNN —Rep. Adam Schiff on Wednesday became the most prominent elected Democrat to publicly call on President Joe Biden to drop out of the race. The announcement by Schiff, who is running for US Senate in California, makes him the first Democrat to urge Biden to step aside since the failed assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump over the weekend. Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., speaks during the House Judiciary Committee hearing on the Report of Special Counsel John Durham, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, June 21, 2023. And in doing so, secure his legacy of leadership by allowing us to defeat Donald Trump in the upcoming election,” Schiff said in a statement. The Democratic Party remains roiled about the path forward amid fears that, in light of the debate, Biden cannot defeat Trump and he risks taking down-ballot Democrats with him in November.

Representative Adam B. Schiff, the California Democrat who is running for Senate, warned during a private meeting with donors on Saturday that his party was likely to suffer overwhelming losses in November if President Biden remained at the top of the ticket, according to two people with direct knowledge of Mr. Schiff’s remarks at the meeting. If Mr. Biden remained, not only would he lose to former President Donald J. Trump, he could be enough of a drag on other Democratic candidates that the party would most likely lose the Senate and miss an opportunity to win control of the House, Mr. Schiff said at a fund-raiser in New York. “I think if he is our nominee, I think we lose,” Mr. Schiff said during the meeting, according to a person with access to a transcription of a recording of the event. “And we may very, very well lose the Senate and lose our chance to take back the House.”Mr. Schiff’s remarks underscore the depth of the concerns in the president’s party about the prospects for downballot Democrats if Mr. Biden remains in the race, even if most senior Democrats are still unwilling to express such dire warnings in public.

Rep. Adam Schiff is projected to be the top Democrat in the running to replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein. The real headline is that Schiff was able to use a shrewd strategy to close out other Democrats. As a result, Schiff's other opponent will be Dodgers legend Steve Garvey. NBC News projects Schiff to be the top Democrat coming out of Tuesday's California dual Senate primaries. Schiff's strategy was to elevate Garvey as a Trump conservative in the overwhelmingly Democratic state, thus foreclosing fellow Rep. Katie Porter from making it to the general election.

Representative Adam Schiff, the lead prosecutor in Donald J. Trump’s first impeachment trial, and Steve Garvey, a former Major League Baseball star, advanced on Tuesday night to the California general election for a Senate seat, according to The Associated Press. Representative Barbara Lee, a Democrat and well-known Bay Area progressive, was in fourth place. The November general election will determine who will replace Dianne Feinstein, who held the seat for more than three decades until her death in September. During the campaign, Ms. Porter, 50, had accused Mr. Schiff, 63, and his supporters of engineering Mr. Garvey’s ascendance to set up an easier November election. Mr. Schiff, who had raised more than $30 million by last month, spent lavishly on statewide ads that compared Mr. Garvey to Mr. Trump, and that framed him as Mr. Schiff’s chief opponent.

Before Representative Adam B. Schiff became famous as the chief congressional tormentor of former President Donald J. Trump, his professional hallmark was his low profile. In a Southern California district glittering with show business, he was simply “the congressman from Burbank.” In a state teeming with Democratic political stars, he was rarely on short lists for higher office. In Congress, his calling cards for years were the Democratic Study Group on National Security — also known as “the nerd caucus” — which he co-founded, and his knack for securing federal dollars for light rail in Greater Los Angeles. Now Mr. Schiff is a national figure and the favorite to become the next California senator, buoyed in his liberal-dominated state by his anti-Trump bona fides: lead manager during the former president’s first impeachment trial and proud recipient of a censure once Republicans took control of the House. As Tuesday’s primary draws near, Mr. Schiff is the Democratic front-runner, and polls suggest he may be on a glide path to the seat, which was held by Senator Dianne Feinstein for more than 30 years until her death at age 90 in September.

“I have to go get a photo of Adam!”A young woman in dark glasses, a tan trench coat and a lavender bucket hat darts into the street and runs after the white Porsche convertible in which Representative Adam Schiff and his wife are slowly being driven through Chinatown as part of the Lunar New Year’s parade in Los Angeles. Planting herself several feet in front of the car, the woman snaps some pics and then calls out to the passing House member, “Thank you for all that you do!”As she heads back toward her friends, I try to stop her, asking why she is a fan of Mr. Schiff, who is running for the Senate to succeed Dianne Feinstein, who died in office last September at age 90. The woman keeps moving but gushes, with a hint of perplexity suggesting I’m an idiot for having to ask: “Everybody loves him! My mother-in-law in Madison, Wisconsin, loves him! He’s done so much!”

Here's where the leading candidates for the Senate seat stand on housing and homelessness policy. He's proposed an audit of federal homelessness programs and said he'd support funding mental health and substance abuse programs, as well as affordable housing. Katie Porter, who's represented south-central Orange County since 2019, has called housing affordability her "top issue" during her Senate campaign. Under California rules, Democrats and Republicans appear on the same primary ballot and the two candidates with the most votes advance to the general election, regardless of political party. Come November, the seat is expected to stay in Democratic hands in a state where Republicans haven’t won a U.S. Senate election since 1988. Gavin Newsom appointed Laphonza Butler, a longtime Democratic organizer, to fulfill Feinstein's term, and Butler chose not to seek election to the seat. In 2016 and 2018, GOP Senate candidates performed so poorly that two Democrats appeared on the November ballot. Porter opposes earmarks — where lawmakers direct federal spending to a specific project or institution back home — while Schiff and Lee endorsed them.

Gina Arata, one of the volunteers who received the implant, was 22 when a car crash left her with fatigue, memory problems and uncontrollable emotions. She abandoned her plans for law school and lived with her parents in Modesto, Calif., unable to keep down a job. “It’s kind of amazing how I’ve seen myself improve.”Dr. Schiff and his colleagues designed the trial based on years of research on the structure of the brain. Those studies suggested that our ability to focus on tasks depends on a network of brain regions that are linked to each other by long branches of neurons. Dr. Schiff and his colleagues pinpointed a structure deep inside the brain as a crucial hub in the network.

THE MONEY KINGS: The Epic Story of the Jewish Immigrants Who Transformed Wall Street and Shaped Modern America, by Daniel SchulmanOn Feb. 6, 1904, a group of powerful Jewish men met at the Fifth Avenue mansion of Jacob Schiff. Then he asked the same question my grandfather used to ask: What does it mean for the Jews? Schiff is the book’s central figure, and by the early 20th century, on the eve of the Russo-Japanese War, his influence had spread beyond Wall Street. At the time, Jews were being raped and murdered in yet another series of pogroms in imperial Russia. These attacks burned such a lasting scar on the Jewish psyche that, earlier this year, an Israeli major general was moved to compare the slaughter of Israeli civilians on Oct. 7 to “a pogrom from our grandparents’ time.”

Laphonza Butler was sworn into the Senate Tuesday afternoon, making history as the first openly lesbian Black senator to serve in Congress, and the first openly LGBTQ senator to represent California. She will also be the third Black woman to ever serve in the Senate. Butler was appointed by California Governor Gavin Newsom to fill late California senator Dianne Feinstein's seat for the remainder of the term through 2024. NBC News reported that The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) had urged Newsom to appoint Barbara Lee, a Black woman and California Rep. of 25 years. The balcony hovers right over the information desk where Ms. Schiff, a noted poet and English professor, worked from 1995 to 2000, greeting and directing museum visitors. “My boss would stand up there and look down to make sure we were smiling,” Ms. Schiff said. On Tuesday, Ms. Schiff published her fourth book of poetry, “Information Desk: An Epic,” about her five years at the museum, off and on. Her last book, “A Woman of Property,” includes the poem “Lion Felling a Bull,” about a marble fragment from the Met. But her interviewer gave her a binder of other open positions, and soon she started at the information desk.

After sidestepping Ms. Boebert, House Republicans are now conducting what they characterize as an “inquiry” into a potential impeachment, one that is likely to gain steam in the G.O.P. The censure, brought forward by Representative Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, a strong supporter of Mr. Trump, accused Mr. Schiff of lying and spreading distortions in his investigation of the president. Some Republicans were clearly uncomfortable with the idea of censuring Mr. Schiff, and the move failed on its first attempt. But after Ms. Luna dropped a proposed $16 million fine from her resolution, Republicans pushed through the censure on a party-line vote in June. Far from hanging his head in ignominy, Mr. Schiff said he welcomed the vote as a badge of honor that proved he was effective.

But with Schiff running for Senate as a #Resistance hero, the censure is only likely to help him. His Senate campaign fundraised heavily on it, and he thanked his GOP colleagues in a floor speech. In a floor speech earlier on Wednesday, Schiff thanked his Republican colleagues for bringing the censure resolution, saying he stood "proudly" before them. The censure resolution alleges that Schiff "misled the American people and brought disrepute upon the House of Representatives" for his handling of the Trump-Russia investigation. CNN —The US House of Representatives on Wednesday voted to censure Rep. Adam Schiff, a key lawmaker in Democrats’ congressional investigations into former President Donald Trump during his presidency. As part of the censure procedure, Schiff stood in the well of the House floor, while House Speaker Kevin McCarthy repeatedly tried to read a brief rule about censure. Luna announced Tuesday she has secured the number of votes needed to censure and refer him to the House Ethics Committee. It shows you just who is behind this whole effort to distract from Trump’s legal problems is Trump,” Schiff told CNN. In that role, Schiff and the other impeachment managers detailed the House’s case for removing Trump from office at the Senate trial.

The G.O.P.-led House formally censured Representative Adam B. Schiff, Democrat of California, on Wednesday over his role investigating former President Donald J. Trump, the first in what could be a series of votes seeking to punish those whom Republicans have deemed the party’s enemies. “Adam Schiff launched an all-out political campaign built on baseless distortions against a sitting U.S. president,” Ms. Luna said. The censure accused him of engaging in “falsehoods, misrepresentations and abuses of sensitive information” as he sought to unearth connections between Mr. Trump and Russia. The House has censured members just 24 times in the chamber’s history, and typically only after a finding of wrongdoing. Before Mr. Schiff, just two members of the House had been censured in almost four decades.
