New York CNN —2024 may not have been the best or worst year ever for McDonald’s — but it was certainly a memorable one. Another Pennsylvania McDonald’s became the backdrop for the culmination of a massive manhunt this week, when an employee at an Altoona location alerted police to a patron who resembled the suspected gunman who killed UnitedHealthcare’s CEO in Manhattan last week. In that way, McDonald’s became a kind of scapegoat for people who were exhausted of stretching their budgets to afford food and suspecting (not without reason) that corporate greed was at least partly to blame. “We’re always living in some way with McDonald’s,” she noted. “And I think in a lot of ways, we’re all working for McDonald’s — whether we work in a restaurant or not.”

“Macy’s owns valuable real estate holdings,” Barington said in a presentation posted online. They say Macy’s can squeeze more value out of its real estate by paying rent to a subsidiary controlling the property. The company could also sell space to developers to build on Macy’s real estate, like hotels, apartments or offices. The real estate value locked up in Macy’s retail locations is not a new discovery —investors and developers have long sought to build atop Macy’s Herald Square location, and Macy’s has proposed an office tower above the store. The investors planned to take Macy’s private and consider spinning off its real estate assets or separating its online operations from brick-and-mortar stores.

Kuniskis, who retired from the automaker earlier this year, will once again lead the company's Ram Trucks brand, according to two sources familiar with the decision. Older homes are now nearly as expensive as new builds. For the last half-century, newly-built homes in the US have sold for much more, on average, than older homes. But these days, new homes for sale are less expensive per square foot than existing homes. Overall, newly constructed homes are selling for just 3% more than older homes, down from an average of 16% more since 1968, The Wall Street Journal reported. The costs of building materials and construction labor are elevated, which makes repairing or renovating older homes much more expensive.

New York CNN —Even the power of Marie Kondo may not be enough to save the Container Store. In 2019 and 2020, the Container Store got a big boost from “Tidying Up,” the hit Netflix show from the home de-cluttering evangelist. Credit rating agencies rank the Container Store as one of the most financially distressed companies in the retail industry. The Container Store had been set to receive a much-needed $40 million financial lifeline from Beyond, the owner of Bed Bath & Beyond and Overstock.com, that would have put Bed Bath & Beyond products on Container Store shelves. “The rise of platforms like Temu have given consumers some much cheaper options for the type of products Container Store sells,” Saunders said.

Early data on online spending released today showed consumers were being drawn to discounts. Shoppers spent $6.1 billion on Thanksgiving, according to Adobe Analytics, around a 9 percent increase over last year. The spending patterns are separating retailers into winners and losers. Walmart is emerging as one of the winners, reporting that its U.S. sales had increased 5 percent in its most recent quarter.

To the Editor:Re “Trump Seen as a Threat to E.V. Sales” (Business, Nov. 26):It is ironic that President-elect Donald Trump, who claims he will make America great again, wants to kill offshore wind and electric cars. President Biden tried hard to get American industry back into the green transition by promoting domestically built green energy and electric cars. Mr. Trump apparently wants to turn it all over to China. The green transition will happen regardless of what Mr. Trump thinks.
