WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration will address concerns raised by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer about a caffeinated energy drink popular among teens. An agency spokesperson said it "is reviewing the concerns" outlined in Schumer's letter to FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf about the dangers of Prime Energy, a beverage founded by YouTube stars Logan Paul and KSI. Prime Energy is not intended for anyone under the age of 18, according to a company representative. Prime Energy boasts 200 mg of caffeine.

New York CNN —Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has called on the US Food and Drug Administration to investigate the high caffeine content of PRIME Energy drinks, which he claims are being targeted to children as “one of the summer’s hottest beverages for kids.”Schumer said cans of PRIME Energy drinks contain more than double the caffeine of a can of Red Bull and six times more caffeine than a can of Coca-Cola. The company does not recommend the drinks for anyone under the age of 18, according to information on its website. “What this drink is giving you is a caffeine rush, it is a high, followed by a crash,” Dr. Bracho-Sanchez said. On the company’s website, a fact page states, “PRIME Energy contains 200mg of caffeine, per 12 oz. The FDA says 400 milligrams of caffeine a day for healthy adults is “not generally associated with dangerous, negative effects.”CNN has reached out to the FDA for comment.

A 12-ounce can of Red Bull contains about 114 milligrams of caffeine — more than three times the amount in a 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola. Prime Energy has more: 200 milligrams in each 12-ounce can. A 16-ounce can of Bang Energy Drink, the size typically sold in convenience stores, has 300 milligrams of caffeine. The Food and Drug Administration has investigated a handful of reports over the years involving people dying shortly after consuming energy drinks or five-hour energy shots. Pediatricians recommend that youths ages 12 to 18 should not consume more than 100 milligrams of caffeine per day and that children under 12 should avoid caffeine completely.
