Female students reported the biggest decline in use across the board, and Hispanic students also reported a drop in use of any tobacco product. Evidence-based strategies, including price increases, media campaigns and smoke-free policies, are likely part of what caused tobacco product use to drop, according to the agencies. E-cigarettes continue to be the most used among students who reported tobacco product use, at 5.9%, but nicotine pouches are now the second-most commonly used tobacco product, at 1.8%, followed by cigarettes at 1.4%. TOKYO — A 10-year-old student at a Japanese school in China died Thursday after being stabbed on the way to school the day before, Japanese officials said, as they demanded that Beijing do more to protect Japanese nationals in the country. Lin said the boy was a Japanese national whose parents are Japanese and Chinese citizens. “Effective measures will continue to be taken to ensure the safety of foreigners in China, including people from Japan,” he said. CNN —Human brain samples collected at autopsy in early 2024 contained more tiny shards of plastic than samples collected eight years prior, according to a preprint posted online in May. “Compared to autopsy brain samples from 2016, that’s about 50% higher,” Campen said. Nanoplastics are the most worrisome plastics for human health, experts say, because the minuscule pieces can take up residence inside individual cells. In that report, the consortium determined plastics are associated with harms to human health at every single stage of the plastic lifecycle. A March 2024 study found 1 liter of bottled water — the equivalent of two standard-size bottled waters typically purchased by consumers — contained an average of 240,000 plastic particles from seven types of plastics.

Now, a new study has found those who experience more gratitude also have a lower risk of dying. The researchers used data from the Nurses’ Health Study, which included nearly 50,000 women between ages 69 and 96 who completed a six-item gratitude questionnaire in 2016. The researchers controlled for factors such as psychological well-being, health issues and other demographics including social and religious participation. There’s no clear consensus on how often one should practice gratitude, Simon-Thomas said. Having more gratitude has also been linked to being more optimistic in general, and people who express higher levels of gratitude tend to look more for the good in life, Watkins added.
