Hurricane Helene has caused significant disruptions for election officials in North Carolina and across the Southeast, scrambling preparations for early and mail voting that have been in the works for months. North Carolina officials mailed 190,000 ballots last week, some of which may be delayed or destroyed by flooding. Early in-person voting is scheduled to begin Oct. 17 across more than 400 locations in North Carolina. North Carolina is among the core battleground states former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are competing in this fall. The area of North Carolina hit by the hurricane tends to lean Republican politically, aside from Democrat-heavy Asheville.

Nearly all customers of the telecommunications company AT&T were affected by a cyberattack that exposed phone records of calls and texts from May 2022 through October 2022, and on Jan. 2, 2023, the company said Friday. If you are an AT&T customer, here is what you need to know about the breach. AT&T will contact you by text, email or U.S. mail if your account was affected by the cyberattack, the company said. But AT&T also said that “nearly all” customers had been affected by the breach. So if you were a customer from May 1, 2022, to Oct. 31, 2022, or on Jan. 2, 2023, your phone logs were most likely exposed.

Representative Bob Good, Republican of Virginia and the chairman of the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus, was fighting on Thursday to hang onto his seat, as his primary race against a challenger backed by former President Donald J. Trump remained too close to call. The contest between two election deniers, which has turned ugly and personal, was potentially headed for a recount that could drag on for weeks. Mail-in votes were still being counted, and Mr. Good said he could still prevail. Virginia does not have a requirement for an automatic recount, but if the winner is ahead by less than 1 percent, either candidate can request one. It was a rare instance in which both candidates in a photo-finish race had promoted the lie that Mr. Trump won the 2020 presidential election, raising questions about whether either would accept an adverse outcome in his own contest.

CNN —The Republican primary race between Virginia Rep. Bob Good, the House Freedom Caucus chair who angered allies of former President Donald Trump and former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, and state Sen. John McGuire was too early to call Tuesday night. The congressman from Virginia’s 5th Congressional District has faced a fierce effort to knock him out from a broad swath of the GOP in what became the most expensive House Republican primary of the cycle. Vindman’s role in Trump’s impeachment likely made a difference in his campaign. After spending most of his career in Illinois, Bondar moved to Texas in 2020, living outside Dallas – where he voted in this March’s Republican primary. State voting records show Bondar’s early in-person ballot in his primary race is the first time he has voted in Oklahoma.

Butler, a Democratic insider and former labor leader, had never held public office before joining the Senate. With the data from 2022 in and final, we’ve been poring over the data — including our experiment in Wisconsin — to identify opportunities for improvement. The big Wisconsin mail experiment — where we paid voters up to $25 dollars to take a mail survey — didn’t reveal anything especially alarming about our typical Times/Siena polls. On many measures — gun ownership, evangelical Christianity, vaccination status — the Times/Siena poll looked more conservative than the mail poll. The Wisconsin study did offer ambiguous evidence that Times/Siena phone respondents lean a bit farther to the left than the respondents to the mail survey. We’re reordering our questionnaires to let us look at and potentially use respondents who drop out of a survey early.

May 3 (Reuters) - An autopsy showed Tyre Nichols had a legal amount of alcohol and a trace amount of marijuana in his blood when Memphis police beat the Black man to death after a traffic stop in January, ABC News reported on Wednesday, undermining police claims that Nichols was high. Nichols' death provoked widespread outrage after police video showed officers beating and kicking Nichols, 29, as he cried out for his mother near his family home in Tennessee. Nichols' blood alcohol level was .049%, well below the .08% legal limit in Tennessee, and he had trace amounts of marijuana in his system, ABC reported. The video showed the first emergency medical technician to treat Nichols first asked him, "What'd you have? It's easier to leverage misinformation for personal gain within the world of finance than perhaps any other industry. I'm not the type to suggest the only real information you can get on the markets is from established news outlets. Do you think the legacy media is fearful of Elon Musk's new Twitter? I just think the discourse on Twitter is very different from what you'd find on a media website. My position on bitcoin, and the wider digital-currency ecosystem, is that it's too often a solution looking for a problem.

Patients who get their prescription medications by mail in Oklahoma may soon have better protections for the safety of those drugs than any other state. On Wednesday, Oklahoma regulators proposed the nation’s first detailed rule to control temperatures during shipping, according to pharmacy experts. “This is a huge step,” said Marty Hendrick, executive director of the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy, after the board voted to approve the rule Wednesday. The proposed rule would extend that same standard of care to all medications moving through the state, regardless of shipper or medication cost. “The landscape of pharmacy has changed,” he said, with more people getting their medications delivered, especially since the pandemic began.

The top House Republican, Kevin McCarthy, said early on Wednesday he was confident his party would prevail as its candidates showed signs of closing in on victory. * With 44 of 435 House seats still lacking a clear winner, Republicans were leading in vote tallies for 17 of them. If they hold onto those leads, McCarthy would likely replace Democrat Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House. * If Cortez Masto and Kelly prevail, Democratic control of the Senate would likely continue through the second half of Biden's term. Currently the Senate is split 50-50 with Vice President Kamala Harris, a Democrat, able to cast the tie-breaking vote.
