Now the edifice may finally be cracking: The #MeToo movement is picking up pace in the medical profession. Dr. Hadden was an obstetrician-gynecologist who was first arrested when a patient called the police and reported that he had licked her genitals during an exam. Though I was working at the medical center while the accusations unfurled, I wasn’t aware of them until more recently. Even after Dr. Hadden was found guilty, Columbia did not notify all of his patients about his behavior. On Nov. 23, the one-year look-back window closes for past patients to sue Dr. Hadden and the medical center.

Nearly four months after a former Columbia University gynecologist was sentenced to 20 years in prison for abusing patients, the university on Monday apologized to victims and announced a “multipronged” response plan. For years, victims and their supporters have called on the university to notify Mr. Hadden’s former patients about the charges against him. Since his conviction, Columbia medical students, staff, lawmakers and Mr. Hadden’s victims have increased pressure on the university to admit fault for enabling Mr. Hadden’s decades-long abuse of his patients. The university said it would notify patients within 72 hours of the announcement. It will also establish a $100 million settlement fund that will be open for one year starting in January, according to a news release.

Mr. Hadden, 64, was convicted in January on federal charges that stemmed from assaults against four patients who traveled from and through New Jersey, Nevada and Pennsylvania for gynecological and obstetrics appointments. Dozens of victims, their relatives and supporters packed the seats, anxiously awaiting the judge’s official sentencing. The hearing in the Southern District of New York was the latest chapter in the decades-long saga. Prosecutors have said that Mr. Hadden abused dozens of his patients during medical exams starting in the early 1990s. Mr. Hadden was first arrested in 2012 when a patient called the police after an exam and said he touched her sexually.

Robertson was interested in politics until he found religion, Dede Robertson told the AP in 1987.
