Luzerne County is one of many counties in Pennsylvania — and across the country — that shifted to the right this year. Kevin Kraynak, a Luzerne County native, traveled from his home in California to try to get out the vote. Luzerne County became a hotbed of election denialism in 2020, and Pennsylvania is an open-carry state. Just over 152,000 total ballots were cast in Luzerne County — about the same as in 2020. In only one other Pennsylvania county were Trump’s gains greater.

CNN —Dangerous wildfires are burning on the East and West coasts Monday, with firefighters in New York and New Jersey working to contain a deadly blaze spurred by an ongoing, historic drought – while strong winds in Southern California could fan a destructive fire in Ventura County. Nearly 600 wildfires have burned nearly 7,000 acres in New Jersey and New York since October 1, according to officials. Most of the fires were in New Jersey, where the state’s Forest Fire Service has responded to 537 wildfires. “We were fortunate that the fire started at 9 o’clock in the morning, with daylight,” said Jim Fryhoff, the sheriff of Ventura County. Agricultural officials assessing the impact on farmland planted with avocados, citrus, and berries have estimated the damage at $2.4 million, the Ventura County Star reported.

Their televised trial, which captured the brothers recounting the alleged abuse in grim and graphic detail, ended when the jury could not reach a verdict. After a second trial, the siblings were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. The siblings fatally shot their parents, they testified, after Lyle confronted Jose about his brother’s abuse. When Lyle threatened to expose his father, he testified, Jose appeared to threaten him and his brother. Gascón also said his office was also reviewing a petition from the brothers that challenges their convictions.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, who ascended to office vowing sweeping reforms to the criminal justice system and then faced intense criticism over public safety issues, lost his bid for re-election, The Associated Press projected. In office, Gascón quickly got to work implementing his reformist agenda. San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin was recalled from office in 2022 after his critics assailed him as a soft-on-crime progressive. He then was the assistant attorney general for the U.S. Justice Department’s tax division under former President George W. Bush. Gascón, 70, previously was San Francisco attorney general — a job once held by Vice President Kamala Harris before she won the state attorney general’s office.

“I strongly support clemency for Erik and Lyle Menendez, who are currently serving sentences of life without possibility of parole,” Gascón said in a statement. Erik Menendez and Lyle Menendez at a pretrial hearing in Los Angeles in December 1992. Lyle Menendez was 21 and Erik Menendez was 18 at the time of the killings. Attorneys for the brothers argued in clemency requests that they both were sexually abused by their father beginning at a young age. Those factors and their ages — Lyle Menendez is 56 and Erik Menendez is 53 — make each “an exemplary candidate for clemency,” the attorneys wrote.

City officials haven't yet tallied up what the Trump campaign owes Erie for public safety costs for his most recent rally in September. The five localities that spoke to NBC News have sent their bills to the Trump campaign. Four years later, the Trump campaign hasn't paid. The unpaid bills go back even further for Spokane, Washington, which wants the Trump campaign to pay for costs incurred in a May 2016 visit, before Trump officially became the Republican nominee for president. Similarly, Erie's bills were to cover police, fire and public works personnel overtime, according to city spokesperson Rob Lee.

The 5-year-old, from the town of La Plata, was airlifted by a state police helicopter to a children’s hospital and later pronounced dead, the county said. The gust of wind carried it over a wall and onto the field, the station reported. Witnesses said the bounce house had been secured by stakes hammered into the ground, according to the station. Alyssa Pointer for Business InsiderIn Georgia, an eviction requires a court order, but the law doesn't explicitly make lockouts illegal. In this case, an officer classified the incident as a "crime against property" — a crime committed by the residents themselves. In unincorporated Clark County, where the property is located, operating a short-term rental without a license is illegal. Usually, when a child sells an animal at the county fair, some local macher buys it for more than its market value. All they were waiting for, apparently, was approval from the Shasta County district attorney. Local restrictions in Michigan derailed more than two dozen utility-scale renewable energy projects as of last May, according to a study by the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University. Nationwide, and at least 228 restrictions in 35 states have been imposed to stop green energy projects. The shift has sparked a political backlash that may escalate as more states seek to simplify getting green energy projects approved and built. But many local officials say giving states the power to site large-scale energy projects clashes with cherished U.S. political principles. In Kansas, Osage County’s moratorium on commercial solar and wind projects came in 2022 after multiple hearings.

KINGMAN, Ariz. (AP) — For the second time in nearly four months, officials in a northwestern Arizona county narrowly rejected a proposal to hand count all ballots in the 2024 election cycle rather than using electronic tabulating equipment. County election officials had said it would take 245 new workers and $1.1 million to count all ballots by hand. The Mohave County Republican Party said it had more than 300 volunteers willing to hand count ballots free of charge and Scottsdale attorney Bryan Blehm pledged to represent Mohave County in any related lawsuit. Ryan Esplin, a deputy county attorney who advises the board supervisors, told them no law specifically authorizes the proposed hand count. Prior to the 2022 general election, rural Cochise County in southeast Arizona pursued a hand count before it was stopped by a judge.

“This feels like a really precarious spot.”In Pennsylvania, officials estimate 40 of the state’s 67 county election offices have new directors or deputy directors since 2020. In North Carolina, where the Republican Legislature recently moved to gain more control of state and local election boards, roughly a third of 100 county election directors have left since the 2020 election. Of the local election office, Fitzgerald said he knows they are trying to improve: “But they are not coming through when you need them the most,” he said. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Workers in California will soon receive a minimum of five days of paid sick leave annually, instead of three, under a new law Gov. The law, which takes effect in January, also increases the amount of sick leave workers can carry over into the following year. “Too many folks are still having to choose between skipping a day’s pay and taking care of themselves or their family members when they get sick,” Newsom said in a statement announcing his action. Newsom already signed a law to raise the minimum wage for fast food workers to $20 an hour.
