Housing seems to be slightly more affordable for Gen Z renters than it was for millennials at the same age. The percentage of rent-burdened millennials — renters putting more than a third of their income toward housing — peaked at 62% in 2011, according to a recent Zillow study. And although rents remain high, slightly fewer Gen Zers (those ages 18 through 25) are rent burdened today. As of 2022, the latest data available, 58% of Gen Z renters nationwide were rent-burdened, while 60% of millennials experienced rent burden at the same age in 2012, according to Zillow. According to Zillow's analysis, there are a number of major U.S. cities where it's easier for Gen Z to afford rent than it was for millennials at the same age.

In seven major cities, you'd need to earn more than quadruple the federal minimum wage of $7.25 to afford the fair market rent without spending more than 30% of your income on housing or working a second job, Clever found. To determine the minimum wage needed to afford a fair market priced rental in the 50 largest U.S. metros, the report analyzed wage and housing data from a variety of sources, including the U.S. Department of Labor and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Clever follows HUD's definition of fair market rent, which is the price at which 60% of similar units in the area rent for more than the listed amount and 40% rent for less. An 18-year-old New York state employee was killed while battling a wildfire in Orange County's Sterling Forest Saturday. A brush fire broke out Friday night in Prospect Park, in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, amid a drought that has been plaguing the northeastern U.S. for weeks. The New York City Fire Department posted about the fire on X at around 8 p.m. and said "operations are ongoing." On Thursday, "temperatures soared to well above normal readings," the National Weather Service office in New York said. Autonomous taxis are winning over women in cities like San Francisco by offering an answer to a long-standing concern about ride-hailing apps: misbehavior by human drivers, especially men. CNN —Less than 10 days after Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida, the state is bracing for another potentially devastating blow from a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico. Tropical Storm Milton formed in the western Gulf on Saturday morning just hours after it became a tropical depression, the National Hurricane Center said in a special alert. Milton is forecast to strengthen and bring life-threatening impacts to portions of the west coast of Florida next week. Hurricane watches, as well as storm surge watches, will likely be issued for portions of the Florida coast on Sunday – a dangerous storm surge is expected for some areas that were just affected by Helene. There is also an increasing risk of storm surge for the western Florida Peninsula as early as late Tuesday or Wednesday.

CNN —Less than 10 days after Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida, the state is now bracing for another potential storm brewing in the Gulf of Mexico. Tropical Depression 14 formed in the western Gulf on Saturday morning and is expected to become Tropical Storm Milton in the next 24 hours, the National Hurricane Center said. Hurricane watches, as well as storm surge watches, will likely be issued for portions of the Florida coast on Sunday. There is also an increasing risk of storm surge for the western Florida Peninsula as early as late Tuesday or Wednesday. The hurricane center is warning people in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, the Florida Peninsula, the Florida Keys, as well as the Bahamas to closely monitor this system this weekend and early next week for any impacts.
