Jan is the first person in Australia to be convicted of forced marriage since it was criminalized in 2013. Sakina Muhammad Jan was the first person convicted under Australia's forced marriage laws. Some of the measures borrow from forced-marriage laws in Britain, where hundreds of people take out protection orders each year to thwart an impending forced marriage. Other countries such as France, Canada and Germany also have specific laws against forced marriage. A month before Jan’s sentencing, the immigration minister circulated a directive specifically naming the crime of forced marriage as serious enough to warrant the removal of a visa.

Australian lenders ANZ and Westpac were also impacted, according to Downdetector, a website that tracks cyber outages. Other states also report impacts to their driving services, including Georgia, North Carolina, Texas and Tennessee. Chinese carmakers accounted for 88% of the EV market in Brazil and 70% in Thailand in Q1, according to ABI Research figures. The EV markets in many of these countries are small now, but they're growing rapidly. This is because Chinese automakers are known for their ability to build electric cars for less than their foreign competitors. Australian Senator and shadow cyber-security minister James Paterson said earlier this year that Chinese EVs pose a growing cybersecurity risk. "India is still a little wary of the Chinese market," said Dylan Khoo, an analyst at ABI Research.

In a sign of easing tensions between Australia and China, China said Thursday that it would lift the tariffs it placed on Australian wine more than three years ago. The tariffs, which were first imposed in 2020 amid a nasty diplomatic spat between Australia and China, had all but vaporized the country’s biggest overseas market, worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars or around $800 million at its peak. The decision to lift the tariffs was announced by China’s Ministry of Commerce. “That’s going to take some time to be depleted,” said Lee McLean, the chief executive of Australian Grape & Wine. “And China is not going to solve that on its own.”

A Japanese 10,000 yen and a U.S. 100 dollar banknote juxtaposed against each other in Tokyo, Japan, on Monday, June 20, 2016. Later, the Federal Reserve is expected to hold U.S. interest rates steady but flag cuts are coming by dropping language indicating it is weighing further hikes. Interest rate futures price a roughly 43% chance of a Fed rate cut in March, down from 73% at the start of the year. "A 100% probability of a rate cut would point to euro/dollar at $1.1080, while a rate cut that is fully ruled out for March would point the way to euro/dollar at $1.0660," he said. Expectations of interest rate cuts in China have driven a strong rally in the bond market this month while the yuan has been squeezed by flight from China's crumbling equity markets.
