CNN —Lucy, a fossilized skeleton unearthed 50 years ago this month, transformed scientists’ understanding of human evolution. While there are now fossil hominins twice as old as Lucy, she remains a paleoanthropological rock star. President-elect Donald Trump has won Arizona, NBC News projects, putting its 11 electoral votes in his column after he narrowly lost the state to President Joe Biden in 2020. A fast-growing Latino population and a revolt against Trump among some old-line Republicans put the once-red state into battleground territory. And Biden’s 2020 win in Arizona was just the second time in 28 years that Arizona’s electoral votes went to the Democratic presidential nominee. Arizona was the second-closest state in the country in the 2020 presidential race, with Biden beating Trump by just 0.3 percentage points (10,457 votes). And the state was a good fit for the two issues at the center of Trump’s campaign: the economy and immigration.

Election observers worry that delays in counting mail ballots could give the public a false sense of who’s winning the election. In Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, election officials are still barred from beginning to process mail ballots before 7 a.m. on Election Day – even though election workers in both states have clamored for change. Abortion rights opponents had argued in a pair of lawsuits that the amendment to expand abortion rights violated a state rule that says a ballot proposal must only address one subject. Matt Heffron, a senior counsel for a firm that argued against allowing the abortion rights initiative to stay on the ballot, slammed the high court's ruling. Colorado, New York and Maryland are the liberal-leaning states with abortion ballot measures. Arizona and Nevada — two key battleground states in the presidential election — also have abortion ballot initiatives. That same year, Kansas voters cast ballots against a proposed amendment which would have removed language guaranteeing abortion rights in the state.

The conference announced Thursday that four schools from the Mountain West Conference – Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State – will be admitted to the Pac-12, effective from July 1, 2026. I am thankful to our board for their efforts to welcome Boise State University, Colorado State University, California State University, Fresno, and San Diego State University to the conference. An exciting new era for the Pac-12 Conference begins today.”Ahead of Thursday’s Pac-12 announcement, Mountain West commissioner Gloria Nevarez had released a statement about the then-pending news. The requirements of the scheduling agreement will apply to the Pac-12 should they admit Mountain West members.
