Yesterday’s rally was former President Donald J. Trump’s first since President Biden, an 81-year old white man, dropped out and Vice President Kamala Harris, a 59-year-old Black woman, stepped up. Just how would Mr. Trump proceed? His campaign tried projecting confidence about the switch, even as Ms. Harris had come out swinging, raising $81 million in the first 24 hours and hijacking the media spotlight. Before Mr. Trump took the stage at the Bojangles Coliseum, his spokesman, Steven Cheung, dropped by the reporters’ pen to assure everyone that the Trump campaign was totally, definitely not freaking out about any of this. Was the Trump campaign unnerved by how much money Ms. Harris had already raised?

The day after a historic election, France awoke to final results that none of the polls had predicted. The left-wing coalition’s New Popular Front took the most seats in the National Assembly, but nowhere near enough to form a government, followed by President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist coalition, which lost scores of seats. Finally, in third place, was the party that pollsters and pundits alike had expected to lead — the far-right National Rally. Now the question gripping the country was who would govern France, and how.

Political rivals in Israel offered support. American officials, who had been critical of his plan to invade Rafah, roundly condemned the I.C.C. In the hours and days before, Mr. Netanyahu had appeared embattled, both domestically and internationally.

Republicans who for months have accused President Biden without proof of crime and corruption thought that a former business partner of his son’s could be the key to finally substantiating their most serious allegations. “Hunter’s ex-business partner, Devon Archer, could blow the lid off Joe Biden’s phony claims of innocence,” blared an email on Friday from former President Donald J. Trump’s campaign. Representative James R. Comer, Republican of Kentucky, told Fox News that Mr. Archer could become a “hero” of the House G.O.P.’s investigation into what they call the “Biden crime family,” delivering the damning evidence they need to impeach Mr. Biden. But the testimony this week of Mr. Archer, a former Yale lacrosse player who has been convicted of federal tax charges, fell well short of that, shooting down a bribery allegation Republicans have long promoted and generally rejecting the idea that the elder Mr. Biden had any material involvement in his son’s business dealings. It was the latest instance of House Republicans promising far more than they could produce in terms of proof of their allegations against the president.

The story seemed tailor-made for opponents of outsiders. “VETS KICKED OUT FOR MIGRANTS,” blared the front page of The New York Post, one of many outlets that last week carried the tale of homeless military veterans’ being expelled from their temporary hotel rooms north of New York City so that people coming from the Mexican border could stay there. The sensational story grew out of claims by a veterans advocacy group and was immediately seized upon by local Republican elected officials. It began unraveling when reporters could not locate any displaced veterans. It fell apart further when managers of the Crossroads Hotel in Newburgh, N.Y., said they had no record of the veterans’ staying there.
