Ties have been at their lowest point in decades amid disputes over trade, technology, Taiwan and Chinese aggression in the South China Sea. “We respect the choice of the American people,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement earlier. A second Trump presidency “could mark a new beginning in China-U.S. relations if the chance that has been offered is not wasted,” state-run newspaper China Daily said in an editorial on Wednesday. But Chinese officials laser-focused on stabilizing their faltering economy are also mindful of the tariffs of 60% or more that Trump has vowed to impose on all Chinese imports. One person it may turn to for help is tech billionaire Elon Musk, a devoted Trump supporter with extensive business interests in China who is wildly popular there.

Coach USA, the operator of Megabus and other commuter bus lines in the US and Canada, filed for bankruptcy protection in Delaware late Tuesday, seeking to sell its assets and shed debt incurred in an ill-timed 2019 private equity buyout. Coach, the largest privately owned bus company in the US, was acquired by private equity firm Variant Equity Advisors for $270 million, mostly using debt that is still on the company’s books. Coach CEO Derrick Waters said that buses will continue to run as normal during the company’s bankruptcy. The company operates several other bus brands in addition to Coach, including Megabus, Dillon’s Bus Company, and Go Van Galder. Renco Group, a private investment company, would acquire the majority of Coach’s assets in exchange for taking on $130 million of company debt and certain union contracts.

Hong Kong CNN —China is increasing patrols in waters near a group of frontline islands controlled by Taiwan, as tensions rise after two Chinese fishermen drowned during a pursuit by Taiwan’s coast guard who accused them of trespassing. The patrols are likely to put Chinese coast guard vessels in closer proximity to their Taiwanese counterparts, potentially raising the risk of miscalculation and conflict. Two survived after being rescued by Taiwan’s coast guard, while the other two were found unconscious and confirmed dead after being taken to the hospital in Kinmen. Taiwan's coast guard inspects a vessel that capsized during a chase off the coast of the Kinmen islands on February 14, 2024. “I could keep all the money,” Waters once told culture website Flavorwire of the screenings. During a press preview for the exhibition, Waters revealed that one item he wished they had procured was Divine’s “cheater” — drag terminology for a prosthetic vulva with fake pubic hair. Whether it’s subverting a four-figure tub of moisturizer or Hollywood, Waters has always been true to himself. “I’ve always made fun of the rules of the world that I live in. That’s how you can have fun, by breaking some of them.”One rule Waters isn’t breaking, however, is his daily writing schedule.

Agencies in Santa Barbara County destroyed 2,000 bottles of wine that were sold by the company Ocean Fathoms, the office of the county’s district attorney announced last week. CNN —Scientists have identified the geological site that they say best reflects a proposed new epoch called the Anthropocene — a major step toward changing the official timeline of Earth’s history. “We’ve moved into this new Earth state and that should be defined by a new geological epoch,” Waters added. On Tuesday, the scientists announced the geological site — Crawford Lake in Ontario, Canada — that best captures the geological impact of the Anthropocene, according to their research. Annual sediment samples from the Crawford Lake site have revealed geochemical traces of nuclear bomb testing, researchers have confirmed. The alpha spectrometry output shown on the screen indicates the presence of plutonium in a Crawford Lake drill core sample.

Muted tk tkLike other band members have done consistently over the years, Waters denied that Pink Floyd intentionally structured its 1973 album to align with the 1939 film. Before my article, “The Dark Side of the Rainbow” was just a word-of-mouth thing on an early internet message board. I mostly listened to alternative rock in those days, but Pink Floyd’s Usenet group had a hold on me. I shared that page on the Usenet group and added it to a Pink Floyd “Web ring” — a system in which people with related pages linked to one another. The article page was logging hundreds, then thousands, and eventually tens of thousands of visitors.

Kalamata, Greece CNN —A boat that sank killing dozens of people was caused by a “sudden” shift in weight, Greek authorities said Thursday, in one of the largest-scale migrant vessel disasters in southern Europe this year. “A sudden shift in weight is likely to be the cause of what led the boat to capsize and then sink,” Hellenic Coast Guard spokesman Nikos Alexiou told CNN on Thursday. A migrant vessel pictured by the Greek coast guard on June 13 sank in the Mediterranean on Wednesday. From their accounts there seem to have been women and children on board,” he told CNN while helping survivors on the ground. “These people had not eaten for many days, had not drunk water for many days, were burnt by the sun,” the Greek Rescue Team member told CNN affiliate CNN Greece.

CNN —Brirtish rock legend and Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters’ planned concerts in Poland in April have been canceled amid a backlash to the musician’s stance on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In the letter, Waters wrote that he opposed the West sending weapons to Ukraine to aid the embattled country in its war against invading Russia. The shows were planned to take place in Krakow as part of the his international tour. In a Facebook statement addressed to the UK’s The Guardian and Poland’s Gazeta Krakowska newspapers, Waters denied he or his management had canceled the Poland shows. He pointed the blame instead to Lukasz Wantuch, a Krakow city councilor who wrote his own Facebook post on September 10 opposing Waters’ shows.
Tens of thousands of people are scrambling for homeowners insurance in Louisiana at the peak of hurricane season after recent storms drove their carriers out of business. Massive claims from those storms drove large national insurance companies to scale back their coverage and remaining companies to jack up rates. The strategy seemed to work: Rates eventually stabilized, although Louisiana remained one of the most expensive states for homeowners insurance. That pushed the small insurance companies to their financial limits and squeezed reinsurers, who raised their rates. The state insurer’s rolls, which totaled 34,500 in August 2020, ballooned to about 110,000 last week.
