A Chicago police officer died following a shooting on Monday night in the East Chatham neighborhood on the city’s South Side, authorities said. As officers approached the vehicle, rapid gunfire erupted from one of the individuals, and the officer was struck multiple times, Snelling said. The wounded officer was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The officer, who was 26 years old, served with the Chicago Police Department for nearly three years, Snelling said. The suspect who shot the officer tried to escape in the vehicle but wasn’t able to and ran away, Snelling stated.

Hate crime and terrorism charges were announced Thursday after a Jewish man was shot while walking to synagogue in Chicago over the weekend in what police now say was a “targeted” attack. On Thursday, Abdallahi was charged with an additional felony count of terrorism and one felony count of a hate crime, Chicago’s top cop, Supt. “We want everybody to know that we will never tolerate violence that’s rooted in hate and bigotry,” Snelling said during a press conference announcing the charges. “We are all working together to put an end to the hatred of our Jewish siblings.”Foxx noted that terrorism charges in such cases are rare. “Members of the Jewish Orthodox community are the most vulnerable to violent attacks,” Rabbi Sholomo Soroka said.

The shooting victim was released from the hospital Saturday afternoon, according to Debra Silverstein, the alderman for Chicago’s 50th Ward, where the shooting occurred. Hate crime charges still a question markAs some Jewish leaders call for hate crime charges, police say they still need to interview the suspect and collect evidence before considering such charges. On Monday, Silverstein said she was upset with the lack of hate crime charges in the case. “The police have assured me that they are continuing to gather evidence, and additional charges – including hate crime charges – can still be added,” Silverstein said. Shoshanah Conover, Senior Rabbi of Temple Sholom also said the community is frustrated with the lack of hate crime charges.
