New York CNN —Julia Galliker learned out of the blue that there was a problem with milk carton supplies. For Galliker, executive vice president of the Pennsylvania-based Galliker Dairy Company, that’s a big problem. The little milk cartons go not only to schools, but to other institutions like nursing homes and correctional facilities. “Like other milk carton producers across the industry, Pactiv Evergreen continues to face significantly higher than projected demand,” a company spokesperson said in a statement. “So there’s really not been any replacement for school milk cartons.”

CNN —A high-profile lawsuit brought by TikTok users and creators last month challenging Montana’s statewide ban against the short-form video app is being funded by the social media giant itself, the company told CNN on Wednesday. TikTok has been covering legal fees for the group of five TikTok creators, said Jodi Seth, a TikTok spokesperson, separately from the company’s own lawsuit to block the state’s new law targeting the app over national security concerns. “We support our creators through various programs and have an ongoing dialogue about their presence on TikTok,” Seth said in a statement. We will support our creators in fighting for their constitutional rights.”TikTok’s involvement in the creators’ suit was first reported this week by The New York Times, weeks after the initial court case was filed. The suit by the TikTok creators was the first to challenge Montana’s law banning TikTok from being offered within state lines and establishing penalties for the company and for app stores that violate the law.

CNN —Journalists could soon enjoy greater protections under federal law. A bipartisan group of US senators and congressmen united this week to reintroduce the Protect Reporters from Exploitive State Spying Act, or as it is more commonly known, the PRESS Act. First, it would prevent the government from compelling reporters from being forced to disclose their sources. “The PRESS Act is the strongest federal shield bill for journalists we’ve ever seen,” Seth Stern, director of advocacy for the Freedom of the Press Foundation, said in a statement. The PRESS Act would solve for that by enshrining protections into federal law.

CNN —After nearly 10 years of playing the same lottery number combination, a $50,000 payday has finally arrived for a man in Maryland, lottery officials said. “I play the same numbers all the time, I’ve been doing so for years,” the man told officials from the Maryland Lottery’s headquarters in Baltimore. He learned in disbelief the following day that he’d won the top prize using his special set of five digits, the Maryland Lottery reported. As a bonus, the anonymous winner also won an additional $15 off of three numbers from another line that he’d selected himself. “Sometimes it’s birthdates or house numbers or uniform numbers of their favorite athletes, and sometimes they’ve just decided certain numbers feel ‘lucky’ to them,” Elkin said.

Officials in Philadelphia voted at an emergency meeting Tuesday morning to reinstate a security measure that could dramatically slow vote counting in Pennsylvania's most populous city. The procedure, known as poll book reconciliation, requires temporarily halting vote counting to scan poll books into the voting system to ensure those who've voted in person did not also vote by mail. Philadelphia is the only one of the 67 counties in the battleground state that will use the procedure during the count. Turnout is expected to be much higher Tuesday, with the hotly-contested Senate race between Democrat John Fetterman and Republican Mehmet Oz.
