London CNN —Private schools in Britain may conjure up images of rolling lawns, pristine tennis courts, and dormitory rooms, serving as gilded hothouses of privilege. Not every private school is “synonymous with privilege and great wealth,” argues Sue Hannam, headteacher at Lichfield Cathedral School, a private school in central England. About 620,000 children are currently enrolled in private schools in Britain, equivalent to almost 6% of all school children, according to the Independent Schools Council. Hodge at the Education Policy Institute noted that, accounting for inflation, private school fees had risen by as much as 25% since 2010. Still, a demographic shift means state schools may “welcome” the influx, Sibieta wrote last year.

New York CNN —Long before you take your high schooler on college campus tours, consider this: Shopping for college shouldn’t be any different than shopping for a home. Getting into that top 25% cohort is based on SAT or ACT scores, and having a high, unweighted GPA based on a rigorous high school curriculum. Other ways to reduce college costs before applyingWhile your children are in high school they can take other steps to reduce the total cost of their education. If their high school doesn’t offer them, there is a program called Freshman Year for Free offered by the Modern States Education Alliance. Getting the minimum AP scores a college requires to earn a college credit will lower how much you ultimately have to spend on tuition.

Property taxes, the lifeblood of local governments and school districts, are one of the most powerful and stealthy engines of racism and wealth inequality our nation has ever produced. In theory, the property tax would seem to be an eminently fair one: The higher the value of your property, the more you pay. This results in wealthy communities enjoying lower effective tax rates while generating more tax revenues; at the same time, poorer ones are forced to tax property at higher effective rates while generating less in return. And for all the taxes Black people paid, they got little to nothing in return. During those years, the nation’s real estate industry made white-owned property in white neighborhoods worth more because it was white.

When Jessica Albright returned with her family to their home in East Palestine, Ohio, last month after four months away, she opened the car door and took a deep breath — then stopped and thought: Maybe not too deep. Hauling suitcases up the steps, she tried to discern whether the acrid scent in the air had lessened. The mother of three could not be certain — of the smell, of its effects or of the correct next steps for her family. Now, they were back, not because their health issues had resolved, or because the house had been proven free of contaminants. They were back because they had $41 left in their savings account and felt they had no other choice.
