House Republicans are set to nominate a new speaker Wednesday, more than a week after the historic ouster of California Rep. Kevin McCarthy, as the chamber has been thrust into an unprecedented standstill.
Two candidates have formally announced their bid for the speakership – House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio.
But with a razor-thin GOP majority in the chamber, whether either can get the votes needed to secure the gavel remains to be seen.
The rule change, sponsored by Rep. Chip Roy, a Texas Republican, appears to have strong support in the conference.
Still, McCarthy told reporters Tuesday evening that he instructed members of his conference not to nominate him.
