Courtesy Riley familyProsecutors have said a variety of forensic, digital and video evidence presented during the trial will point to Ibarra as Riley’s killer. The evidence includes a jacket police found in a dumpster near where Ibarra lived, which prosecutors say had both Ibarra’s and Riley’s blood on it. FBI Special Agent Jamie Hipkiss also testified about cellphone data he examined, which included photos on a phone connected to Ibarra from the early morning of Feb. 22. On Friday during opening statements, Ibarra’s defense attorneys said there was not enough evidence to prove Ibarra was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. She fought for her dignity, and in that fight she caused this defendant to leave forensic evidence behind,” Ross said.

An OSHA spokesperson said in a response to NBC News that the agency did forward his safety allegations to the Coast Guard, which has the jurisdiction to investigate such claims. The Coast Guard also noted at the start of the hearing that the Titan never underwent an independent review, which is standard practice in the industry. “If the Coast Guard became a problem, then he would buy himself a congressman and make it go away,” McCoy said, adding that he resigned soon after. Rush “said the usual response that ‘it takes too long,’” Kohnen testified about getting OceanGate’s submersible classified by the industry. In a transcript of the conversation made public by the Coast Guard as part of the hearing, Rush denied he was going to put anyone at risk with the Titan.

Seconds after that brief communication, the Titan was “pinged” for the last time, according to the opening presentation of the two-week hearing. Days later, authorities found its wreckage on the floor of the North Atlantic Ocean, several hundred yards from the remains of the Titanic, according to the Marine Board of Investigation, which is the highest level of inquiry by the Coast Guard. Lochridge testified he was supposed to pilot the submersible and objected when Rush decided he wanted to pilot the vessel. Rush made multiple errors during the dive, Lochridge said, including ignoring issues with the current and keeping his distance from the wreck. “It just didn’t seem to me that it had been particularly well-thought-out or executed,” he said of the submersible.

CNN —A former OceanGate scientific director said the Titan submersible suffered a malfunction six days before imploding in June 2023, killing all five people on board. The dive was aborted because, upon resurfacing, a platform malfunction caused by an issue with the variable ballast tank, which controlled the submersible’s buoyancy, caused the platform to invert to 45 degrees with the back bow facing upward. Because the platform malfunction took considerable time to correct, the dive was aborted and they returned to the surface to fix the issue. He said he knew the Titan submersible had not been inspected by the United States Coast Guard in 2021, 2022 or 2023. Ross also mentioned two incidents during the 2022 Titanic expedition dives, including a loud bang heard while surfacing in Dive 80.

CNN —The firing of Jimbo Fisher will reportedly cost Texas A&M University about $77 million to buy out his contract, according to multiple reports and the salary tracking website Spotrac, after the school relieved him of his duties as head football coach on Sunday. When Fisher was first named head football coach at Texas A&M in 2017, the university said he had agreed to a 10-year contract worth $75 million, adding no “state-appropriated funds” would be used toward his salary. The finances behind the decision to fire the coach are “monumental,” Ross Bjork, Texas A&M director of athletics, said during a Sunday evening news conference. “As the contract states, there is a buyout provision in coach Fisher’s contract and those details will be worked out,” Bjork said. Illinois' Pretrial Fairness Act, which abolishes cash bail as a condition of pretrial release, will take effect Sept. 18, making Illinois the first state to end cash bail and a testing ground for whether — and how — it works on a large scale. Critics say cash bail policies are especially unfair to Black people and other people of color. In 2017, New Jersey essentially replaced its cash bail system with a risk assessment process that gauged the potential danger a released defendant could pose to the community. But cash bail is still allowed in some instances in that state and others that have curtailed the practice, such as New York and Alaska. California has made several efforts to reform its cash bail system, but lawmakers balked at sweeping reform.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An 84-year-old man was convicted Thursday of shooting and killing a Kansas City lawyer who had won a multi-million judgment against him in a civil lawsuit. Prosecutors contended Jungerman shot Pickert because he was upset the attorney had won a $5.75 million judgment for a homeless man who Jungerman shot in 2012 because he thought the man was stealing from one of his businesses. “We are very, very thankful that the jury has spoken and that justice has finally been brought to this family,” Tim Dollar, assistant Jackson County prosecutor, said after the verdict was announced. During the trial, prosecutors played an audio recording of Jungerman bragging about the murder to his farmhand, Kansas City media reported.
