New York CNN —Top pollster J. Ann Selzer will retire from the Des Moines Register’s famed Iowa Poll and the survey will “evolve” after it failed to accurately capture former President Donald Trump’s strong support in the 2024 election, resulting in a 16-point miss. Trump ultimately swept to victory over Harris in the state by a 13-point margin, winning the actual vote 56-43%. Prior to the 2024 survey, the Iowa Poll under her stewardship had been considered by many to be the methodological gold standard. As of June 2024, election forecaster Nate Silver gave Selzer an A+ rating. In an op-ed for the Register, Selzer said that her decision to part ways with the poll predated the erroneous results.

CNN —The ball that made Shohei Ohtani the inaugural member of the 50-50 club and placed him firmly in the history books (again) is up for sale – and could be yours for a mere $4.5 million. The outing was the first three-homer game as well as the first 10-RBI game of Ohtani’s career. The ball from the game is now going up for auction, with bids starting at $500,000 – but keen collectors can purchase it privately for $4.5 million. Two-time AL MVP Ohtani is the first and only member of the impressive 50-50 club – though some fans are hoping he could make it to 60-60. CNN —Shohei Ohtani made yet more baseball history on Sunday, becoming the first player in 130 years to record 85 extra-base hits (XBH) and 45 steals in a single season. In doing so, the two-time AL MVP joined Hugh Duffy as the only other player ever to accomplish the feat. CNN —The director of Project 2025, the conservative blueprint for a potential second Donald Trump term, has stepped down amid intense criticism including from the former president. In addition to stepping down from Project 2025, Dans is also leaving the Heritage Foundation. “Project 2025 is on the ballot because Donald Trump is on the ballot,” Harris campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said. Justice Sonia Sotomayor issued a lengthy and strongly worded dissent in which she excoriated the court for its decision. The chief justice said the trial court will have to assess what of Trump’s alleged conduct is immunized under the new test handed down by the high court, and the opinion said that additional briefing will be needed for the trial court to do so. Justice Amy Coney Barrett expressed frustration with how the court was sending the case back down for more proceedings. She suggested that because Trump’s wholesale challenge to the indictment had failed, at least some of the case could go forward. In that sense, if Smith narrowed his indictment, lower courts could hear the Trump trial this year.

CNN —The Supreme Court handed down a landmark decision Monday granting Donald Trump partial immunity from special counsel Jack Smith’s election subversion case, handing the former president a significant win during his reelection bid. For starters, the Supreme Court ruled that for “core” presidential activity, Trump has the absolute immunity he had sought. The analysis about what’s immune and what isn’t “ultimately is best left to the lower courts to perform,” Roberts wrote. Immune, immune, immune,” she wrote. That sent lower courts scurrying into historical analyses to figure out if modern gun laws had some connection to the 18th Century. Roberts’ opinion said that lower courts were misunderstanding what the majority had said in that ruling. But Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, a member of the court’s liberal wing, suggested it was the high court’s fault for not providing clarity for lower courts to follow. One deals with a Pennsylvania man’s challenge to a federal law prohibiting felons, including those who are non-violent, from possessing firearms. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar presented that argument with an eye toward several other challenges pending to similar federal gun prohibitions that involve non-violent criminal activity.

CNN —The Supreme Court upheld a federal law Friday that bars guns for domestic abusers, rejecting an argument pressed by gun rights groups that the prohibition violated the Second Amendment. The 8-1 decision lands as the nation continues to grapple with gun violence and mass shootings. A roiling political debate over firearms has left Washington unable to pass new gun laws. The decision could help shore up similar federal gun regulations that have been challenged since the Supreme Court vastly expanded gun rights in 2022. Rahimi’s lawyers claimed that the Supreme Court’s blockbuster decision two years ago meant that the law on domestic violence orders could not be squared with the Constitution.
