Newsom is far from the only Democratic governor preparing to take on Trump. In blue states like Illinois, Massachusetts and New York, officials are already vowing to mount legal and policy fights against the incoming Trump administration on issues like abortion rights, environmental regulations, gun control, immigration enforcement and more. But the second Trump era will offer Democratic officials opportunities to showcase their own leadership as they position themselves for potential future runs. A less combative toneSome Democratic governors, including those widely seen as potential 2028 presidential contenders, did not immediately take aim at Trump’s incoming administration. “Finally, let’s root for the success of the new administration and keep working together to get things done.”Pennsylvania Gov.

Gavin Newsom, a fierce critic of former President Donald Trump, on Thursday called for lawmakers to convene a special session later this year to safeguard the state’s progressive policies on climate change, reproductive rights and immigration ahead of another Trump presidency. The move — a day after the former president resoundingly defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential race — effectively reignited California’s resistance campaign against conservative policies that state Democratic leaders started during the first Trump administration. California’s move is part of a growing discussion among Democratic state officials across the country seeking to protect policies that face threats under Trump’s leadership. Newsom and Democratic lawmakers said they are acting now to shield the state’s policies that have made it a leader in the nation. “He wants to be seen as a political revivalist, and so that puts him front and center,” McCuan said.

After Tuesday’s onstage meeting, Harris had said that she and her opponent owed it to voters to debate again. Harris’ senior campaign adviser, David Plouffe, blasted Trump on X as “chicken man.”The Republican nominee often changes his mind. He asked, “Wasn’t ‘The Apprentice’ a great show, though?” and wistfully reminisced about the final night of his election campaign in 2016. Will Trump stick to his refusal to debate Harris again? But Bryan Lanza, a senior Trump campaign advisor, insisted that this was a tactical decision.

CNN —Kamala Harris’ plan as a running mate was to brush past JD Vance as nothing but a rubber stamp for Donald Trump. Vance’s elevation — despite his relative lack of government experience — is giving Harris a new opportunity to go after Trump. Several people hoping to get picked as Harris’ ticket mate echoed that message as they angle for the job. Harris, 59, has the unique experience of leading a selection process only four years after going through it herself. “We’re in a position where somebody has done the job of vice president,” a Harris adviser told CNN.

CNN —An Illinois woman was fatally shot inside her home this month by a sheriff’s deputy who responded to her 911 call, and the deputy is now charged with murder in the case, a prosecutor said this week. Sangamon County sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson and another deputy responded to the call around 12:50 a.m., authorities said. The sheriff’s office said the deputies, who were not injured, reported the shooting around 1:20 a.m. Crump’s office has said Massey was unarmed. When the two responding deputies encountered Massey, she “appeared to be calm, perhaps unwell, not aggressive,” the court document said. Sean Grayson has been fired from his job as a Sangamon County sheriff's deputy and faces murder and other charges in Sonya Massey's death, officials said.

Think Big America has already funded support for constitutional amendments favoring abortion access in Ohio, Arizona and Nevada. Fourteen states now ban abortion and debate elsewhere rages since the U.S. Supreme Court's June 2022 decision to upend the 50-year-old Roe v. Wade opinion that legalized abortion. "My commitment to protecting and expanding reproductive rights has been lifelong,” Pritzker, who has often recalled attending abortion-rights rallies with his mother as a child, said in a prepared statement. “It’s a mess.”Despite talking over each other regularly, neither Pritzker nor the moderators pressed Bailey on that statement. Pritzker’s extreme policies are destroying the city,” Bailey said. Pritzker, it’s time for him to own it.”Pritzker blamed the Covid-19 pandemic for a rise in crime in Chicago and nationally. At the end of the Sept. 30 quarterly reporting period, Pritzker had $42.3 million on hand after raising $80.8 million during the period and spending $38.5 million. “He’s too conservative for Illinois,” Pritzker said.
