CNN —Former National Football League reporter Jim Trotter filed a discrimination lawsuit against the NFL and NFL Media Tuesday, alleging that he was let go by the football league because he publicly challenged Commissioner Roger Goodell and other executives on the NFL’s “record of race discrimination and lack of diversity.”Trotter worked as a sports reporter for the NFL from 2018 until March. Trotter’s departure from NFL Media was one of many difficult decisions — similar to decisions recently made by many other media organizations — to address a challenging economy and a changing media environment,” an NFL spokesperson said. We take his concerns seriously, but strongly dispute his specific allegations, particularly those made against his dedicated colleagues at NFL Media,” a league spokesperson said. Trotter’s claim also seeks a full-scale investigation into discrimination within the NFL, including NFL team owners. “I hope this lawsuit leads to real change across the league and in the newsroom,” Trotter said in a statement.

CNN —Jessica Pegula advanced to the fourth round of the US Open with a hard fought 6-4 4-6 6-2 victory over Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, continuing the impressive performances of American players at their home tournament. 3 seed will now face her compatriot Madison Keys for a place in the quarterfinals after Keys completed a 5-7 6-2 6-2 victory over Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova in her own third-round match. She really picked up her level and forced me to go after that third set.”Remarkably, Pegula has also reached the fourth round in both the doubles and mixed doubles at Flushing Meadows. Robert Prange/Getty ImagesPeyton Stearns will also join her compatriots in the fourth round after she defeated Britain’s Katie Boulter to reach this stage of a grand slam for the first time in her career. But with Pegula, Keys, Stearns and Coco Gauff all reaching the fourth round and with Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton all still in contention in the men’s draw, American tennis seems to be flourishing again.

“Even the path that you want for yourself may not happen.”Pegula, 29, has come to this moment from the opposite end. A classic late-bloomer who doesn’t have the height or obvious athleticism of many of the best women, she did not crack the top 100 until she was 25 years old. Now she is ranked third in the world, yet she often goes unmentioned in discussions of the world’s best players. As the U.S. Open gets underway, American tennis is riding high on optimism. The U.S. is the only country with two women in the top six.

With Pegula 4-3 up in the second set tiebreak and having just wrongfooted Świątek with a lob, “Cotton Eye Joe” began playing on court, forcing the umpire to call a let while the song continued, and the crowd murmured in disbelief. “I’ve never had that happen, let alone with ‘Cotton-Eye Joe.’ I was like: ‘Is this really happening right now?’ Of all the songs. Christinne Muschi/The Canadian Press/APThe point was replayed and that seemed to derail Pegula’s second set tiebreak, as Świątek won the next 12 points in a row, a run that included leveling the match at a set apiece. “She really pushed me, so I needed to change something up,” Świątek said afterwards, according to the WTA’s website. I’ve got to watch the match and analyze it, because for sure she was fighting for every point and I did as well.

CNN —One of the most prestigious tennis tournaments outside of the four grand slams, the Madrid Open attracts the biggest names in the sport. However, this year’s edition has drawn as much attention for off-court controversy as it has for the action on the clay surface. Following the backlash, the skirts were swapped for long shorts in Sunday’s final, but the crop tops remained. “In the end, it is a form of sexist violence that is so widespread because people don’t even notice it.”The ball girl outfits were changed slightly for the final. Julian Finney/Getty ImagesThe Madrid Open and IMG – the tournament is part of the sports management company’s roster of tennis events – weren’t immediately available for comment when contacted by CNN Sport.
