That means buyers can combine existing tax credits with the deep discounts on offer over the next three months. Hours after Newsom announced his proposal Monday, Bloomberg News reported that his office planned to exclude Teslas from any state rebate program, citing an idea to limit the proposed aid based on automakers’ EV market shares. The current federal tax credit also applies to leases, and some dealerships are exploiting a loophole that allows EV lessees to qualify for the full $7,500 credit without meeting income or manufacturer requirements. In a recent Edmunds analysis of mid-priced vehicles leased this year, the average monthly payment for EVs when factoring in tax credits was $428, far lower than the $572 for vehicles with gas engines. “If the tax credit goes away and it’s a significant amount that’s being utilized by dealers, you’ll have them rather upset for a while,” Drury said.

A cadre of blue-state governors is already preparing a litany of political and legal moves to shield their states’ policies and residents from federal actions under Donald Trump's new administration. In California, Gov. A spokesperson for Trump didn’t immediately respond to questions about how Democratic governors are responding to his return to the White House. Phil Murphy pledged to both push back against Trump when necessary, while also seeking out areas for compromise. “If it’s contrary to our values, we will fight to the death,” Murphy said at a Wednesday press conference, mentioning issues such as immigration and reproductive rights.

Gavin Newsom, a fierce critic of former President Donald Trump, on Thursday called for lawmakers to convene a special session later this year to safeguard the state’s progressive policies on climate change, reproductive rights and immigration ahead of another Trump presidency. The move — a day after the former president resoundingly defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential race — effectively reignited California’s resistance campaign against conservative policies that state Democratic leaders started during the first Trump administration. California’s move is part of a growing discussion among Democratic state officials across the country seeking to protect policies that face threats under Trump’s leadership. Newsom and Democratic lawmakers said they are acting now to shield the state’s policies that have made it a leader in the nation. “He wants to be seen as a political revivalist, and so that puts him front and center,” McCuan said.

WASHINGTON — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump sued CBS on Thursday over an interview of his Democratic rival Kamala Harris aired on its “60 Minutes” news program in early October that the lawsuit alleged was misleading, according to a court filing. The version that aired during the “60 Minutes” program on Oct. 6 did not include what the lawsuit calls a “word salad” response from Harris about the Biden administration’s influence on Israel’s conduct of the war. “Former President Trump’s repeated claims against 60 Minutes are false,” a CBS News spokesperson said. Trump has repeatedly assailed the network on the campaign trail over the episode and has threatened to revoke CBS’s broadcasting license if elected. CBS has said Trump backed out of his own planned interview with “60 Minutes.”

New York CNN —Fox News anchor Bret Baier is all too keenly aware that Fox’s viewers want him to affirm what they already feel. And his recent social media activity shows that he is supremely aware of the Fox base’s extreme disdain for Harris and distrust of the media. Baier, the anchor of Fox’s 6 p.m. “Special Report” newscast, is also the network’s chief political anchor. But because the Arizona call presaged Trump’s defeat, Fox was scolded and second-guessed by many of its own viewers, including the sitting president. Scientists with the National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center began sounding the alarm as early as Sept. 23. In a YouTube video posted that morning, the National Hurricane Center’s deputy director, Jamie Rhome, described a tropical cyclone that would “briskly develop” into a hurricane. Monday night, the National Weather Service posted on X that heavy rain and powerful wind gusts would hit the Southeast later in the week. “It is not common for the National Weather Service to use words like ‘catastrophic’ to describe forecasts,” Buncombe County Manager Avril Pinder said at a news conference Thursday morning. California is banning legacy admissions at private colleges and universities, ensuring that some of the country’s most selective schools will not favor applicants with familial or monetary connections to the schools. Gavin Newsom on Monday signed AB 1780 into law, prohibiting legacy and donor preferences in admissions at private, nonprofit institutions. Schools including Stanford University, the University of Southern California and Santa Clara University will now join the California State University system and other public institutions in the state that have long-banned legacy preferences. This is about making sure we’re leveling the playing field.”The law will affect schools with among the highest rates of legacy admissions — Stanford, USC and Santa Clara. New York CNN —Hoda Kotb, the co-anchor of NBC’s morning show, “Today,” is leaving her position early next year, she announced Thursday. Kotb has co-hosted the program with Savannah Guthrie since 2017, taking over from Matt Lauer, who was fired following allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior at work. “It was time for me to turn the page at 60,” Kotb said on “Today” Thursday while holding back tears. Kotb joined NBC in 1998, first as a correspondent on the “Dateline” newsmagazine and was named the co-host of the 10 am hour of “Today” in 2008 with Kathie Lee Gifford In 2019, Jenna Bush Hager took over the role. Washington CNN —Jury selection is set to begin Thursday in a closely watched defamation trial pitting voting technology company Smartmatic against the right-wing cable network Newsmax, in a high-stakes case over the airing of false 2020 election claims. The Newsmax case revolves around the same false claims, championed by former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies, that the 2020 election was rigged by Smartmatic software and others. The Florida-based company sued Newsmax and other right-wing outlets and figures in 2021, alleging that its reputation was destroyed by the lies. The Newsmax case will test the legal limits of publishing lies about the 2020 election, and the trial will play out during the final stretch of the 2024 campaign. ‘Dozens’ of defamatory reportsAfter mainstream news outlets – and even Fox News – projected that Democratic nominee Joe Biden would win the 2020 election, Trump and his surrogates falsely claimed that he won.

Gavin Newsom’s recent executive order requiring state agencies to remove homeless encampments on public property, leaving the homeless community caught in the middle and uncertain where they will go. CNN —Former President Donald Trump recounted a story to reporters on Thursday about being involved in a helicopter emergency landing with former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. “I know Willie Brown very well. On Tuesday night, Stephanopoulos expressed regret for his frank remark, saying through a spokesperson, “Earlier today I responded to a question from a passerby. ABC News separately said that Stephanopoulos “expressed his own point of view and not the position of ABC News.” Regardless, any damage inflicted by the comment was already done. Many journalists simply do not buy the narrative that Biden, his campaign, and the White House are selling. The Stephanopoulos interview is the perfect example of that. Instead of helping him move forward, granting the interview has effectively backfired, with Biden failing to even convince Stephanopoulos with his message.

The latest effort by the White House to quell the controversy is already disintegrating. His reasoning frustrated several governors who’d come to the White House to seek reassurance about Biden’s condition, sources said. “I’m not going anywhere,” Biden told military families gathered to watch July Fourth fireworks at the White House. And on Thursday, the presumptive GOP nominee offered to debate Biden one-on-one with without moderators. The increasingly unpromising state of the Biden campaign has many Democrats worried — one reason the ABC News interview and a scheduled press conference at the NATO summit in Washington next week will be so crucial.

CNN —In the first week of a new Trump administration, President Joe Biden’s climate wins would get put through the shredder. “He has said he’s going to come back with a vengeance,” former US special climate envoy John Kerry told CNN. CNN —Donald Trump’s allies in right-wing media have a problem ahead of CNN’s presidential debate: They’ve set the bar too low for President Joe Biden. That might sound like an exaggeration to those who don’t tune in to Fox News or listen to talk radio, but it has been a real and constant theme in the right-wing media universe. That’s a worry for right-wing media figures, which risk seeing their bogus narrative about Biden being ripped up in real time. One such claim boosted by Trump’s media allies is the conspiracy theory — which lacks any evidence — that the president will be on performance-enhancing supplements or drugs during the debate. While it is an absurd accusation, it is one MAGA Media is gleefully pushing, even attempting to do so on CNN’s own air.

New York CNN —Elon Musk told advertisers last year to “go f**k yourself.” This year, he is showcasing a much different attitude. The erratic billionaire, realizing that he very much needs major advertisers to power X, was in the South of France on Wednesday, attending Cannes Lions, the world’s largest advertising festival. Put together, it’s is no mystery why major brands have taken their advertising dollars elsewhere. Musk even said at the time that the damage to X’s bottom line was so great, it could eventually kill the company. Musk likely does not want to see the platform go the way of the woolly mammoth, which is why he is now trying to woo advertisers back.

In such a scenario, a court-appointed trustee would be tasked with securing the assets and then selling off Jones’ media empire, including the website, studio space, and broadcasting equipment. “Infowars would no longer exist,” Christopher Mattei, an attorney who represents some of the Sandy Hook families, explained this week to CNN’s Hadas Gold.
