On Monday, the Pentagon issued a new statement attempting to clarify the long-standing discrepancy about the number of troops in Syria. The vague reference to additional troops in Iraq leaves open the possibility of a significantly larger presence than was previously acknowledged, just as in Syria. Defense officials insist the Pentagon has not misled the public about the core number of troops in Syria, which they have said since 2020 is around 900. Concealing the true number of US troops in Syria dates to Donald Trump’s first administration. CNN —Trump allies are calling for the federal government to punish Deloitte after an employee at the consulting firm apparently shared his private messages with JD Vance. The Post did not reveal who corresponded with Vance, now Trump’s running mate, and leaked those communications. “Maybe it’s time for the GOP to end Deloitte’s taxpayer funded gravy train?” Trump Jr. wrote on X, noting that Deloitte receives billions of dollars in government contracts. Trump Jr. told CNN he was speaking his mind as a private citizen. Neither Trump nor Vance have publicly threatened Deloitte, and it’s worth noting that Trump Jr. has indicated he does not plan to serve in the federal government.

Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond called the devices “a huge problem,” adding they were still investigating whether the shooters used a switch or another type of weapon. “Machine gun conversion devices have no place in our community,” US Attorney Prim Escalona said. Woodfin, the Birmingham mayor, noted that conversion devices are illegal federally but not under state law, and he called on the state legislature to ban the devices. Last week he participated in a demonstration at a Montgomery shooting range in which trained firearm experts tried (and failed) to aim while using the conversion devices. New York CNN —Some of YouTube’s biggest stars are taking on Lunchables with a competitor of their own. MrBeast, Logan Paul and KSI are teaming up on a “groundbreaking new better-for-you lunch option” called Lunchly, which combines all of their products into one meal that’s aimed at their young fan base. “Our end game has always been to not only provide high quality products, but also healthier alternatives,” Lunchly cofounder Logan Paul said in a press release. Lunchly’s launch comes when Lunchable, owned by Kraft Heinz, announced a major initiative last year to be a part of school lunch programs. A 26-year-old man was charged on Friday with kidnapping and murdering a nursing student whose body was found in a wooded area at the University of Georgia in Athens the previous day, the authorities announced. They called the homicide, the first in nearly 30 years on campus, “a crime of opportunity” and said that the two apparently had not known each other. Goldman Sachs chief executive (and noted party DJ) David Solomon will no longer perform at high-profile events, picking Wall Street over South Beach, a representative from the second-largest investment bank confirmed to CNN. Solomon, who performed under the alias DJ D-Sol, began spinning tracks at festivals and in night clubs a few years ago. “David [Solomon] doesn’t work to play diplomat,” Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, who runs Yale School of Management’s Chief Executive Leadership Institute, recently told CNN. And while shares of Goldman Sachs (GS) may be down by more than 8.4% this year, they’re still up by about 40% since he took over in 2018. Goldman Sachs announced third-quarter results on Tuesday morning, reporting earnings of $5.47 per share, which beat the $5.31 expected by analysts.

A trio of economic reports on Tuesday found the U.S. economy generally facing slowing inflation, a weakening but still challenging labor market and diminishing odds of an imminent recession. Yet inflation remains a concern for many businesses, especially smaller ones, according to the August small business optimism index from NFIB. Although the panel of economists sees the economy slowing in the quarter that begins Oct. 1, they also see a reduction in the odds of a recession. The panel forecasts a 48% chance of a recession, down from 50% a month ago and 56% in July. At the same time, the economists see the unemployment rate rising from its current 3.8% to 4.5% by next summer.
