☆ Tesla Autopilot and similar automated driving systems get ‘poor’ rating from prominent safety group

CNN —The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which rates cars and SUVs for safety, examined so-called advanced driver assistance systems such as Tesla Autopilot and found them wanting. Of the 14 systems tested by the agency, 11 earned a “poor” rating including Tesla’s Autopilot and so-called Full Self Driving systems. Insurance Institute test drivers also looked at what would happen if the driver became incapacitated with the automated driving system in use. Of the systems tested, only GM’s Super Cruise handled that sort of situation the proper way, according to the Institute. The Insurance Institute will continue to monitor software updates and improvements and will periodically retest the systems, Harkey said.

☆ Unlimited Deposit Insurance Can’t Solve Everything

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen put a damper on hopes for one immediate solution to the present banking crisis when she said on Wednesday that she wasn’t considering trying to offer “blanket” insurance guaranteeing all deposits. But this will almost certainly not extinguish the idea. Secretary Yellen also said it was “worthwhile” for Congress to look at deposit insurance. Treasury already can, as it did with Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, alongside the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. use a “systemic risk exception” to cover all of an individual bank’s depositors with accounts above the $250,000 limit. And the idea of universal insurance is gaining traction, including among some smaller banks and their advocates, who already feel that megabanks are treated differently.

Over the last several years, Capital One has committed significant resources toward making its credit card miles competitive with other heavyweights in the industry. Starting Oct. 7, all but two of Capital One’s airline and hotel partners will transfer at a 1-to-1 ratio. British Airways is one of six airline loyalty programs that will now transfer from Capital One at a 1-to-1 ratio. By moving the bulk of its partners to a 1-to-1 transfer ratio, Capital One miles are now comparable to Chase Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards, both of which transfer to most of their partners at a 1-to-1 ratio. If you don’t have a Capital One credit card, the Capital One Venture currently comes with a sign-up bonus that can put a chunk of miles in your pocket fairly quickly.
