Everything with this election has been amplified, said Christy Pruitt-Haynes, a distinguished faculty member at the NeuroLeadership Institute. Giving employees some roomPruitt-Haynes expects many employers will be lenient if employees need to take some time to digest the outcome. Keeping exchanges civilLove or hate the election result, having a strong response to it limits “our ability to think logically and strategically. Which can make for some very ill-advised remarks at the office or on group chats if the election comes up. That’s why managers and other leaders at work need to make a concerted effort to remind people, when the time is right, about why they are there.

See here: Wells Fargo this week disclosed that it had fired more than a dozen employees for “simulation of keyboard activity,” Bloomberg reported, citing filings to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. In other words, they were faking work, perhaps with the kind of mouse jiggler that you can buy online for $20. At any rate, some bankers over at Wells Fargo seem to have gotten caught last month. “And that’s a symptom of a much larger problem.”In Wells Fargo’s case, managerial mistrust would be understandable, given the bank’s history. Work is part of our identity here in a way that people from other countries find at turns fascinating and pathological. The bill would aim to ensure that people aren’t pinged with work emails, texts or calls outside their established work hours, with notable exceptions for emergencies or scheduling issues. If the boss intrudes on your non-work window three times, you can report them and the state could impose fines starting at $100. No one likes pausing Succession to respond to a 9pm request, but the guilt of ignoring it and wondering whether your boss will be mad at you is also, like, not fun. A historically tight labor market has given workers more leverage to negotiate their pay, hours and working conditions.

Gallup’s Quarterly Workforce Indicator surveys consistently show that managers are a linchpin to employee engagement, retention, productivity and trust in leadership. As it turns out, effective training for managers is not a thing at many workplaces. “I would say 99% of employers don’t provide effective training — and I’m not exaggerating there,” said Ashley Herd, a former human resources executive who founded @ManagerMethod. In fact, how managers speak with employees — and how often — can go a long way to building employees’ trust and commitment, according to Gallup. Have that person then lead an internal training for managers and another one for employees about how to work with their managers.
