Israel told the U.S. it would only agree to create safe zones for residents of the Gaza Strip in the southern portion of the enclave, Israeli national security adviser Tzachi Hanegbi said Tuesday, as Israel continued its airstrikes on northern Gaza.
Israel also told the U.S., which has sought to ensure that humanitarian aid can enter Gaza, that aid efforts must address the issue of freeing the hundreds of hostages taken by Hamas militants in their Oct. 7 raid on Israel.
“The issue of returning the hostages, which is something sacred between us, must be a central component of any humanitarian effort,” Hanegbi said.
