The two-time grand slam winner was handed the ban in September 2023 after being found guilty of anti-doping rule violations by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Independent Tribunal. CNN —As she serves a four-year doping ban, Romanian tennis star Simona Halep is now pursuing legal action against a Canadian health supplements company for damages in excess of $10 million. According to the complaint, Halep used Schinoussa supplements during the 2022 US Open tournament in New York. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) has said Halep’s suspension is backdated and will run from October 7, 2022, until October 6, 2026. Halep said in a statement after her suspension that she had adjusted her nutritional supplements ahead of the hard-court season in 2022. “I was tested almost weekly after my initial positive test through early 2023, all of which came back negative,” Halep said.

LONDON (AP) — Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep has been suspended from professional tennis for four years for doping violations, the International Tennis Integrity Agency said Tuesday. The 31-year-old Romanian had been accused of two doping offenses — failing a drug test during the 2022 U.S. Open and for irregularities in her Athlete Biological Passport, the ITIA said. A panel concluded that Halep “had committed intentional anti-doping rule violations.”Halep had been provisionally suspended since October 2022. Such passports provide a baseline reading of substances in an athlete’s body and are considered a way to help chart doping. The tribunal reported that “likely doping” was the explanation for the irregularities in Halep’s profile.

According to the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), Halep tested positive for Roxadustat, which is a banned substance listed in the 2022 World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List. The two-time grand slam champion, who has been provisionally suspended, denied knowingly taking the banned substance and vowed to clear her name. In a long post written on his Instagram account on Sunday, he said there was “no chance” Halep would have purposely taken a banned substance. Halep won her first grand slam at the French Open in 2018 and won her second at Wimbledon in 2019.
