On Sept. 10, she posted the U.K. open casting call for the roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley to her 14.2 million followers on X. “Every time we sit down to have a fun conversation about Harry Potter, the conversation becomes angry and depressing, and so we end up not publishing,” she says. “There are so many fans who deeply disagree with what Rowling is saying, but still want to engage in the Harry Potter fandom.”Ironically, while Rowling’s actions have undermined many Potter fans’ dedication to her, they also appear to have strengthened those fans’ solidarity with each other. Alas, they’ve come a little too close to that with “The Regime,” a political satire that’s weird but not very good, other than savoring Winslet’s over-the-top antics as an autocratic leader. When the story begins, Vernham is already engaging in odd behavior that leaves her ministers (who assemble in “Dr. Matthias Shoenaerts and Kate Winslet in "Regime." Lustily sneering her dialogue in an exaggerated accent, Winslet throws her all into the character, but to what end? But after watching “The Regime,” consider this an offer they probably should have refused.

But this was almost the end of something for “Minx.” HBO Max, which ran the first season in 2022, canceled the show as the second was finishing production, leaving fans holding an empty brown wrapper. Season 1, in which Joyce started Minx with the low-rent pornographer Doug Renetti (Jake Johnson), was a rough ride; its raunchy pop history and sitcommy odd-couple high jinks didn’t completely mesh. But I’d rather watch a show that does an exciting thing inconsistently than one that does a dull thing well. The eight new episodes don’t entirely clean up its freewheeling mess, but they make up for it in verve and enthusiasm. “Minx” is a racy, smart snapshot, and you just have to accept certain blemishes unretouched.

There’s “Station Eleven,” the 2014 novel by Emily St. John Mandel about the aftermath of a swine flu, which was turned into a much-discussed 2021 HBO Max series, in which an 8-year-old girl manages to survive with the help of a stranger turned surrogate parent. “The Last of Us,” HBO’s video game adaptation, which debuted in January, features a zombie-fungus pandemic; a seemingly immune teenage girl is humanity’s one hope. “Leave the World Behind,” Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel — soon to be a movie — about a bourgeois family vacation gone very bad, features a vague but menacing threat of apocalypse. These stories are, in various ways, about how and whether our children can survive the mess that we’ve left them — and what it will cost them to do so. In “Station Eleven,” post-pans (children who were born after the pandemic) are both beacons of optimism and conscripted killers deployed by a self-styled prophet who hopes to erase anyone who holds on to the trauma of the past.

One of the great delights on television at the moment is “The White Lotus,” HBO’s comedy-drama about terrible people vacationing in luxurious places. Set in its first season at a Hawaiian resort, and currently at a cliff-side Sicilian hotel (both part of the fictional White Lotus hotel chain), creator Mike White ’s series is a voyage into the empty lives and damaged psyches of the privileged class. Mr. White’s characters, for the most part, are rich maddening narcissists, incapable of joy. I love them all very much.
