If the former president wins, Caparra’s “my version of this country” comment could be instructive. Economic concerns dominateIf Trump wins, voters like Joseph Knowles and Brian McMutuary will be part of his comeback math too. CNNIf Harris wins, women will be the foundation of her coalition. Many Trump voters echo their candidate in saying the only way for Harris to win is through fraud. Attorney Joan London is another Haley voter turned Harris voter.

“We have to reduce spending to live within our means,” Musk said. That gives Musk’s frankness about reductions — and his track record of making large, painful cuts at his own companies — added weight. The Trump campaign didn’t immediately comment but has previously said that the GOP agenda wouldn’t cause short-term economic hardship. There’s some skepticism on Wall Street that a new Trump administration could implement spending cuts on the scale Musk has proposed. “They’re both indicating they intend to maintain substantial deficits and elevated government spending, certainly compared with the strength of the economy,” Elliott said.

Abby Elliott knows her way around a comedy. “I kind of went into it like, Oh, should I do a voice?” Elliott said. That could be fun.”That show was “The Bear,” which returns for its third season on Thursday, on Hulu. Set largely in the fraught kitchen of a Chicago restaurant, it stars Jeremy Allen White as a troubled chef. “The Bear” is a comedy only in the classical sense, in that it emphasizes human foibles and does not end in disaster.

CNN —The US Food and Drug Administration is warning that dangerous counterfeit versions of Botox have been identified in multiple states, putting the safety of consumers at risk. The incidents of counterfeit Botox being administered to consumers appear to be connected to products that have been purchased from unlicensed sources and then administered by either unlicensed or licensed providers. The counterfeit Botox products may be identified by the lot number C3709C3 found on the outer carton and vial, the FDA said. Counterfeit botox has been found in several states. Most often, when counterfeit Botox is sold, “the injector knows they’re purchasing something counterfeit,” Sung said.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Senate voted Wednesday to put a politically appointed board in control of the Alabama Department of Archives and History, a change proposed after some lawmakers were upset about the department hosting a lecture on LGBTQ+ history. State senators also approved legislation that would allow local government officials to dismiss library board members they appointed if they become displeased with their performance. He said the change would ensure board members are responsive to elected officials. Board members are selected by a vote of the trustees and confirmed by the Alabama Senate. Elliott said existing state law gives city councils the ability to appoint library board members but currently gives no mechanism for removal.

Consider one in the fourth quarter, when Hurts rolled to his left and almost seemed out of options. “He made a lot of really clutch plays in that second half,” Philadelphia coach Nick Sirianni said. He zipped into the end zone from 12 yards out with 2:37 left in overtime, and the Eagles beat the Buffalo Bills 37-34 on a cold, rainy Sunday. “He's been clutch for us, clutch for this city and clutch for this team for the last three years now. Hurts played a miserable first half, throwing for 33 yards while the Eagles had 99 yards overall.

Cheap, second-hand, and purloined weapons comprised Hamas’ deadly makeshift arsenal that fueled a devastating, multi-pronged attack on Israel over the weekend. CNN analyzed dozens of photos and videos of Hamas militants during the surprise assault to identify the weapons used to kill at least 1,200 people in Israel. In previous battles with Israel, Hamas was known to have fired rockets made of old water pipes, the researcher noted. BulldozersPhoto-illustration: CNN/Mohammed Fayq Abu Mostafa/ReutersSeveral experts who spoke to CNN emphasized the ad hoc nature of the Hamas attack. In some videos, Hamas militants can be seen driving Israel Defense Forces (IDF) vehicles and using Israeli weapons that were likely taken during the initial fighting.

LONDON (AP) — A new exhibition is opening in London to chart for the first time the contributions that Black British culture made to U.K. fashion and design history and to celebrate Black designers who haven't received public recognition. “The Missing Thread: Untold Stories of Black British Fashion" at central London's Somerset House, which opens Thursday, pays tribute to the influence of Black designers in fashion from the 1970s. Curators said that the idea of a display celebrating Black fashion and culture has germinated for some time. But Oldfield — who had a Jamaican father — is rarely referenced as a Black designer, and has never championed Black culture. And that was largely a problem for Black designers at the time,” Ibi said.

Los Angeles CNN —California has spent a stunning $17.5 billion trying to combat homelessness over just four years. “The problem would be so much worse, absent these interventions,” Jason Elliott, senior adviser on homelessness to Gov. David Swanson/AFP/Getty ImagesThe admittedly reductive math would leave nearly $4 billion for services like mental health treatment. Still, tackling mental health issues among the unhoused is a major plank in the Newsom administration’s effort. “One of the surprising things was how optimistic people were that relatively small amounts of money would have prevented their homelessness,” Kushel said of the people surveyed.

There are fears that a rise in delinquencies as a result of the downturn could cause significant losses at banks, which finance many commercial real estate deals. Office space in the United States was also much more generous per person than in Europe and Asia, he said. London, Berlin, Madrid and Hong Kong were also forecast to have a large amount of excess office space. Before the pandemic, the Californian city was one of the hardest places in the United States to find office space, with a vacancy rate of only 9.5%. Now, 30% of its office space is either vacant or due to return to the market in the next year — a 30-year high.

Hampton, Va. CNN —In a small conference room just off a runway at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, some of the US Air Force’s most elite F-16 pilots were gathered. This year marks the team’s 70th anniversary – it was established in 1953, six years after the Air Force split from the Army and became its own service. A team of ProPublica reporters earlier this year began looking into the travel of various Supreme Court justices, not entirely sure what they would find, if anything. But their editors encouraged the team to keep working the story, Justin Elliott, a member of the reporting team, told me by phone on Thursday. “The progress was gratifyingly steady,” Elliot told me, cautioning, however, that “it was not easy.”Easy or not, the final product that published on Thursday morning was unquestionably worth the effort. “These trips appeared nowhere on Thomas’ financial disclosures,” the ProPublica team wrote. “From my perspective as a reporter,” Elliott told me, “I feel so lucky to have the reporting resources and time resources to do a heavy lift like this.
The week that tech became exciting again

CNN Business —Let’s be honest: For much of the past decade, tech events have been pretty boring. In each case, the changes were powered by new AI technology that allows for more conversational and complex responses. And there are already rumors of another event next month for Microsoft to demo similar features in its Office products, including Word, PowerPoint and Outlook. Chinese tech giants Alibaba and Baidu also said this week that they would be launching their own ChatGPT-style services. As part of the settlement, the family of Stone Foltz and the university both said they will work to address and eliminate hazing on college campuses. Foltz’s parents have started a foundation focused on hazing education and have spoke to students at other universities about its dangers. “We can continue our fight saving lives,” said Shari Foltz, whose son died died of alcohol poisoning in March 2021. Eight former fraternity members either pleaded guilty or were found guilty on various charges, including reckless homicide, hazing and giving alcohol to a minor. “Hazing and pledge programs are a relic of the past.”After the hazing death, Bowling Green expelled Pi Kappa Alpha and said it would never again be recognized on campus.
CNN —An atmospheric river event, bringing ample amounts of moisture to the West this weekend, will gradually move across the country and bring hazardous weather to millions. The blockbuster storm will begin in the West with heavy snow, gusty winds, and coastal flooding, then move eastward, threatening potential blizzard conditions in the Midwest and tornadoes in the South. More than a dozen western states are under winter weather alerts this weekend as the potent storm system moves across the region. Heavy rain will also be notable up and down the West Coast, particularly in California, where flooding concerns exist through Sunday. Similar to a fire hose, it shoots moisture into one area for an extended period of time, resulting in very heavy rain or snow.
CNN —Back-to-back-to-back systems will make their way across the United States over the next few days, with the last – and largest – storm bringing heavy rain, blizzard conditions and the potential for tornadoes. Along the coast, heavy rainfall and gusty winds will hammer the area with 1 to 2 inches of rainfall expected through Friday … before the main event arrives. Flash flooding, blizzard conditions and tornadoes possible next weekA blockbuster storm looks to be taking shape in the West for this weekend into early next week, threatening flash flooding, blizzard conditions and tornadoes. “As the system moves into the Plains early next week, a spring-like storm system develops,” Myers said. That threat is also increasing across the southern Plains and Gulf Coast region.
