Elon Musk’s daily $1 million lottery for registered swing state voters who sign his super PAC’s petition falls into a legal gray area and could potentially violate election law, three experts told NBC News. Paying someone to vote or to register to vote is explicitly illegal under federal law. “This is at best very questionable legally,” said Michael Morse, an assistant professor of law at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. But none of the experts who spoke with NBC News believed law enforcement is likely to stop the lottery or fine Musk before the election. “You can only register to vote in Pennsylvania until today.

No matter the poll, voters consistently say that the cost of living is their top concern, usually followed by threats to democracy, immigration and the economy in general. Female voters are backing Harris by 14 points, while Trump is winning men by 16 points, according to the latest NBC News poll. The October NBC News poll showed Harris leading Trump by 5 points, 45% to 40%, on who better represents change. New York Magazine announced Monday that it is parting ways with star political reporter Olivia Nuzzi, whose previously undisclosed personal relationship with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. led to an investigation into her work during the 2024 campaign. This investigation, conducted by the law firm Davis Wright Tremaine, “reached the same conclusion as the magazine’s initial internal review of her published work, finding no inaccuracies nor evidence of bias,” New York Magazine said in a statement on its website. Kennedy’s spokesperson, meanwhile, wrote that the former presidential candidate “only met Olivia Nuzzi once in his life for an interview she requested, which yielded a hit piece.”Nuzzi wrote a profile on Kennedy in November 2023, headlined: “The Mind-Bending Politics of RFK Jr.’s Spoiler Campaign.” Its subheading read: “He’s a conservative. Japanese American leaders slammed former President Donald Trump after he compared Jan. 6 rioters to those of Japanese descent who were incarcerated during World War II just because of their race. “Nobody’s ever — maybe the Japanese during the Second World War, frankly. But you know, they were held too.”Several Japanese American leaders condemned Trump’s comments, with Ann Burroughs, president and CEO of the Japanese American National Museum, calling them an “egregiously inaccurate and flawed historical analogy.”“Now more than ever, the lessons from the Japanese American incarceration must never be forgotten, ignored, minimized, or erased,” she said in a statement on the museum’s website. Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk has forcefully ramped up his efforts to help re-elect former President Donald Trump, raising eyebrows across the political world and inviting questions about the legality of some of his tactics. Meanwhile, news reports have chronicled some of the issues facing America PAC, a political action committee funded by Musk to help boost Trump in the home stretch of the campaign. The two men rallied together earlier this month in Butler, Pennsylvania, where the former president survived an assassination attempt over the summer. The giveaway plan was met with immediate pushback from some election law experts. Rick Hasen, a law professor at UCLA and an NBC News election law analyst, wrote in a post on his website Saturday that the payments were “clearly illegal.”“Essentially what you’re doing is you are creating a lottery.

CNN —The House task force investigating the first assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump released its interim report on Monday that included excerpts of new testimony from local law enforcement officials who provided firsthand accounts of the lack of communication and security failures at the Butler, Pennsylvania, rally. The testimony in the report from unnamed Butler officials details the chaotic sequence of events from when local officials first spotted the Trump rally gunman, Thomas Crooks, to when Crooks was finally shot down. The task force has also not received any evidence to suggest that the message from local law enforcement about Crooks possessing a weapon reached Trump’s Secret Service detail prior to shots fired, according to the report. The House voted on July 24 to create the bipartisan task force to investigate the attempted assassination. It will issue a final report on its findings no later than December 13, “including any recommendations for legislative reforms necessary to prevent future security lapses,” according to the text of the resolution the House passed.

Kyiv, Ukraine CNN —Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin arrived in Kyiv early Monday morning, as the future of US aid to Ukraine hangs in the balance of the imminent US presidential election and as Russia continues to make small but steady gains on the battlefield. “It’s been absolutely remarkable that Ukraine has been able to do what it’s done,” Austin told reporters. Ukraine has prevented Russian President Vladimir Putin from achieving “one single strategic objective” during the war, Austin said Sunday. China also continues to be a “critical enabler” of Russia’s war effort, the NATO official said.
