In NBC News’ early October national survey, just 4% of registered voters said they didn’t want to make a choice between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. One said they plan to vote for Trump, another that they are likely to vote for Harris, and another plans to not vote at all. How anyone could still be undecided a week out from a critical election can be difficult to fathom for supporters of either Trump or Harris. Eric Bush, a systems administrator from Florida, said he’s waiting until he is in the voting booth to make his final choice. But he is still weighing backing Harris, acknowledging a vote for Harris could lead to bigger-government policies that could help others.

It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done.”The White House quickly insisted that Biden was not calling Trump's supporters "garbage." Biden's comments offered a welcome distraction for Trump, who had been facing heavy criticism for the Garden event, which was packed with a series of crude and racist comments. A Trump campaign official said they were planning to aggressively use the Biden remark to hit Democrats. The Biden comments also threatened to cloud out a Harris' rally Tuesday night at which she offered her closing argument. On Wednesday, Harris was forced to distance herself from Biden's comments.

The change is driven, in part, by internal campaign data showing that sharper messaging against Trump could persuade some still-unsure Americans to support Harris, according to three of the campaign officials. Follow live politics coverage here“We are going to draw more contrasts everywhere we can,” Harris campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond said in an interview. Harris campaign officials said they intend to continue laying out her policy positions, background and plans if she were to win the presidency — and increasing negative messaging is oftentimes a natural evolution in a presidential campaign as the candidates make their closing arguments. “The numbers aren’t moving,” a Harris campaign official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal strategy. NBC News has reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.

The sound of Harris laughingTrump, trying out new material to mock Harris, has dubbed his opponent as “Laffin’ Kamala.”“She’s crazy. The magician/comedian Penn Jillette, who spent time with Trump during “The Apprentice” years, has talked about how Trump does not laugh. That’s a recurring theme among Trump supporters – that outrageous claims are clearly jokes. It’s a tactic that so far seems to have backfired, since Harris supporters also like to share clips of her laughing. “Apparently some people love to talk about the way I laugh,” Harris said.

Kamala Harris has an easy laugh. To the campaign running against her, this appears to be a vulnerability to exploit. Donald J. Trump jumped on it when unveiling a nickname for her on Saturday: “Laffin’ Kamala Harris,” adding that “You can tell a lot by a laugh.” Compilations of her guffawing circulated online this week. Only in an era when everything gets politicized would a campaign come out aggressively against boisterous laughter. Laughter transcends party politics, and it’s helped the messaging of everyone from Ronald Reagan to John F. Kennedy.

Then, a week ago, Biden announced his exit from the race – and pointed to Harris, his vice president, as his successor. Many of those potential picks have been offering Harris’ campaign informal glimpses of how they’d perform as her running mate through appearances on cable news shows. Then, Harris’ campaign and its allies must rapidly revise plans for the Democratic National Convention, which is set to start on August 19 in Chicago.

In the three days since President Biden announced he was quitting the 2024 race, Mr. Trump has entered foreign territory. But within 24 hours, Democratic leaders unofficially crowned Ms. Harris and stamped out any notable opposition. His team considered mounting legal challenges to her campaign committee to make it harder for Ms. Harris to hit the ground running. And Mr. Trump is still cycling through nicknames for Ms. Harris — a sign that he hasn’t yet figured out how he intends to portray her. And some Trump campaign officials have telegraphed plans to “Willie Horton” Ms. Harris.

Former President Donald J. Trump on Wednesday blasted Vice President Kamala Harris as radically liberal and blamed her for what he called the Biden administration’s “disastrous” policies, repurposing attacks he had long leveled at President Biden now that Ms. Harris is poised to be his opponent in November. Speaking in Charlotte, N.C., at his first campaign rally since President Biden dropped out of the race and Ms. Harris cleared the field of potential Democratic rivals, Mr. Trump called Ms. Harris “the ultraliberal driving force behind every single Biden catastrophe.”Mr. Trump repeatedly mispronounced Ms. Harris’s name, called her a “radical-left lunatic” and tagged her with the nickname “Lyin’ Kamala.” He denounced her for casting a tiebreaking vote on legislation that he said had caused inflation and said she had embarrassed herself by trying and failing to deter Russia from invading Ukraine.

The prosecutor-versus-felon approach may appeal to undecided voters who had been sour on both Mr. Trump and President Biden. Mr. Trump, for his part, has been trying to soften some of his harshest rhetoric about seeking vengeance on his rivals ahead of the general election. In the case of Ms. Harris, the contempt is displayed both in public and private. Since then, Mr. Trump has attacked her savagely, particularly when she became Mr. Biden’s running mate in 2020. On Sunday, Mr. Trump, who has insisted he would debate Mr. Biden anytime and anywhere, appeared to try to change the terms of the second debate.

“It’s the Harris-Biden ticket,” GOP Rep. Tony Gonzales of Texas told CNN. “The unique problem with picking her is she can’t run away from any of that,” GOP Rep. Kelly Armstrong of North Dakota told CNN. Vice President Harris has dedicated her career to making life better for working people – while Trump only cares about himself. That’s the contrast the American people will see over the next 106 days.”In Pennsylvania, the GOP campaign arm is focusing on Harris’ previous statements as a presidential candidate in 2019 about banning fracking. “The thing about this race is that both Harris and Trump have held office,” Johnson, the House speaker, told CNN.

Then, he added, in a clearly insincere display of sympathy toward Mr. Biden, “it’s a shame the way they’re treating him. After talking about his proposal to remove taxes on tips for hospitality workers, he urged Mr. Rubio to vote for it. Mr. Rubio had so far this year appeared infrequently on the campaign trail with Mr. Trump. Instead, Mr. Rubio used his time to echo Mr. Trump’s mocking of Mr. Biden’s debate performance and his frequent attacks that Mr. Biden was not mentally fit to lead the country.
