WASHINGTON — Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado told Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Ben Cardin on Wednesday that support from the United States is a “moral reference” for those protesting the government of President Nicolás Maduro, according to a summary of the call obtained first by NBC News. A bipartisan group of senators, including Cardin, issued a joint statement supporting the opposition before the call took place Wednesday. The call with Cardin was the first time Machado has spoken with a U.S. official since González’ exile. Despite that, and the exile of González, Machado insisted that her opposition campaign is still strong and reiterated that Venezuelans are united. “If all Venezuelans that are abroad or young people that were not allowed to register had voted, the result would have been 90 to 10,” against Maduro, Machado said on the call.

The latest partial results released by the commission showed at least 2.3 million people within Venezuela and more than 132,000 outside the country voted Sunday. Machado, a former lawmaker, already has declared herself the winner after results showed her far ahead of nine other candidates. The partial results showed that with about 92% of tally sheets counted, Machado had 2,253,825 votes, or 92.35% of the total.

GENEVA (AP) — Venezuela’s government has intensified efforts to curtail democratic freedoms with use of threats, surveillance and harassment as President Nicolás Maduro faces a re-election contest next year, U.N.-backed human rights experts reported on Wednesday. An international fact-finding mission authorized by the Human Rights Council notes that violent repression between 2017 and 2019 eased after the coronavirus pandemic broke out the following year. In the run-up to the 2024 presidential election, the experts warned that political interference has been on the rise. CARACAS — Venezuela should release arbitrarily detained individuals and end torture, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said on Saturday at the end of a trip to the country. Turk arrived in Venezuela on Thursday and met with President Nicolás Maduro on Friday, in addition to Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, senior government officials, opposition figures and victims of human rights violations. “In my meetings with the president and ministers, I called for all people who have been arbitrarily detained to be released,” Turk said on Saturday in a statement. Turk extended his call to governments around the world to release, pardon or grant amnesty to “all those arbitrarily detained for exercising their fundamental human rights.”During his trip, Turk said he met with people who were arbitrarily detained and tortured. “I was given commitments that torture complaints would be addressed decisively, fully investigated and those responsible brought to justice,” Turk said.

The main targets included opposition leaders, students, journalists and people working for nongovernmental organizations, it said.
