“Smalltown Boy” is not necessarily about running away from a heterosexual upbringing but toward pride, freedom and acceptance. To me, “Holiday” was a metaphor for that place where I could live inside a bright, shiny rainbow. I took a few extra days of leave at the end, which happened to coincide with Seattle Pride.
