Elliott Investment Management has requested a special meeting at Southwest Airlines , formalizing the launch of a long-signaled proxy fight for control of the carrier's board. Elliott has also trimmed the size of its board slate from 10 director candidates to eight, after Southwest shrunk its board size from 15 to 12. CNBC reported last month that Elliott was preparing to call a special meeting. David Hess, who joined Southwest's board in 2021, was also on the board of Arconic in the midst of its proxy fight with Elliott. Elliott has never before called for a special meeting, which at Southwest carries a higher threshold of approval compared with voting at a regularly scheduled shareholder meeting.

Price gouging is the practice of retailers artificially inflating prices dramatically when the retailer's costs have not increased. In times of crisis, when urgent demand vastly outpaces supply, consumers can be especially vulnerable to price gouging. Florida is preparing for Hurricane Milton to make landfall on its western coast Wednesday, deepening the wounds left by the devastation of Hurricane Helene, which ravaged the southeastern U.S. about a week earlier. The attorney general's office has received more than 450 consumer contacts alleging price gouging related to Helene, which "mostly concern fuel," a spokesperson told CNBC. Though the price-gouging panic is normal during natural disasters, just the term "price gouging" has political implications, less than a month out from a presidential election that is extremely close.

According to a statement on the FedEx pilots' website, pilot leaders allege the company has failed to "acknowledge pilot contributions." After 30 days, pilots and management could exercise self-help, which could include a union strike or a company lockout. A statement by pilot leaders says FedEx customers should plan alternative means in the event of a pilot strike. The update comes a month after the Southwest Airlines pilots' union called a vote to authorize a potential strike after souring contract negotiations.
