Unlike Trump’s surprise win in 2016, House and Senate GOP leaders have been preparing for months for a possible GOP sweep. With Republicans winning control of the Senate, delivering on Trump’s agenda will come down to whether the GOP retains a majority in the House. Even with unified GOP control, there would be challenges ahead for Republicans. One issue is the political math: House Republicans believe if they do hold onto the majority, it won’t be by much. But it wouldn’t be easy to clear a huge package through a narrowly divided House even if Republicans control all the levers of power.

Later Wednesday, the White House said Biden had spoken by phone with officials in Florida in advance of Hurricane Milton making landfall. Harris’ visible role on the storm response comes as Hurricane Helene and now Milton have become part of the 2024 campaign, with less than four weeks to go before Election Day. She’s been making statements on issues that don’t typically fall under the purview of her official role as vice president. Her campaign has been consumed in recent days by the latest hurricane as it is working to evacuate staff, pause voter outreach across Florida and keep an eye on potential early voting ramifications following Hurricane Helene in a battleground state like North Carolina. It’s looking like the storm of the century,” Biden said during the briefing.

A 37-year-old Tennessee man was charged over alleged social media threats against President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Barack Obama, according to a press release from the Department of Justice. Kyl Alton Hall was indicted Tuesday on two counts of threatening a sitting president or vice president and one count of a threat to a former president. The U.S. Secret Service investigated the case, which will be prosecuted by the national security and civil rights unit in the local U.S. attorney’s office. A spokesperson for the Secret Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The charges come the same week that all three officials — Biden, Harris and Obama — appeared in Chicago to speak at the Democratic National Convention, where Harris accepted her party’s presidential nomination.

This could be good news for student-loan borrowers looking for relief. When it comes to broader student-loan forgiveness, Harris has stood behind Biden's efforts to cancel student debt. AdvertisementBiden's administration is now working toward a second attempt at broader student-loan forgiveness, which is expected to benefit over 30 million borrowers. Harris's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider on the higher education and student-loan forgiveness policies she might prioritize as a candidate. Beyond student-loan forgiveness, Harris has also vouched for free college and supported Sen. Bernie Sanders's College for All Act, which would make tuition free for students at community colleges and four-year public institutions making up to $125,000 a year.

Still, other Democratic megadonors, including Netflix cofounder Reed Hastings and Abigail Disney, pledged to withhold funds from the party until Biden dropped out. Where Biden's money goes nowCampaign finance experts disagree on the specifics of what the Biden campaign will be able to do with its money. The Biden campaign can either refund its donors, Ghosh told Reuters, or, they agreed, the campaign can pass the money back to the Democratic National Committee. Read previewAll eyes were on ABC News on Friday when President Joe Biden appeared in his first interview since his catastrophic debate appearance last week. Democratic donors and supporters of Biden saw the interview as key to addressing criticisms of his poor debate showing — in which Biden repeatedly fumbled his words and appeared to lose his train of thought. Biden, currently 81-years-old, has long faced criticism over his age and fitness for office, which grew louder following the debate. "If I stopped now, I would go down in history as a pretty successful president," Biden said. The polls show I can win," Biden said.

I’m not leaving,” Biden declared to spooked campaign staff on a phone call on Wednesday as he searched for an elusive comeback. And even a far more competent damage control effort than the White House and the Biden campaign have mounted so far would have struggled to erase that impression. On Wednesday for instance, the White House picked up Biden’s line that he was jet lagged after two trips to Europe in early June. And Biden had the Democratic governors to the White House. The White House and the campaign said the reports were false.

The first presidential debate came and went, and voters gained little additional insight into each candidate's economic visions. The latest Social Security and Medicare Board of Trustees report found that the program will only be able to pay out full benefits for the next 11 years. President Joe Biden delivers remarks during the CNN Presidential Debate at the CNN Studios on June 27, 2024 in Atlanta, Georgia. Many of the Democratic Party's top fundraisers are privately sounding the alarm after President Joe Biden's disappointing debate performance Thursday against Republican former President Donald Trump. CNBC began hearing from worried Democratic campaign donors and fundraisers less than 20 minutes into the 90-minute debate hosted by CNN. "Game over," said a longtime Democratic campaign advisor, who has been raising money for congressional leaders for over a decade and helped raise money for Biden's 2020 White House bid. Biden's campaign co-chair Mitch Landrieu told NBC News this was because the president had a cold.

CNN —CNN Opinion asked political contributors to weigh in on the first presidential debate of the 2024 race. On the other hand, President Joe Biden did not meet expectations and may have increased concerns about his age and ability to lead for another four years. Debates are always more about style than substance, and President Joe Biden’s style was simply awful. Did President Joe Biden come off as a leader or a loser? John Della Volpe, who has been doing intensive research on young voters, said older voters have embraced Biden's policies, such as lowering the cost of prescription drugs, whereas younger voters don't feel similar benefits from them. Rep. Ann McLane Kuster, D-N.H., said older voters in her state and elsewhere are attracted to Biden's "steady hand." At the same time, Biden had a narrow lead among voters 65 and older, according to the poll. While Trump won voters 65 and older in the 2016 election by 7 percentage points, Biden narrowed that gap to 5 points in 2020. The Biden campaign hopes to maintain his apparent momentum among older voters in part by contrasting Biden's proposals for seniors with Trump's policies.

On Wednesday, President Joe Biden's Education Department announced that it approved $7.7 billion in debt cancellation for 160,500 borrowers on Public Service Loan Forgiveness — which forgives student debt for government and nonprofit workers after 10 years of qualifying payments — or income-driven repayment plans. Specifically, according to the announcement, 66,900 borrowers are receiving relief through fixes to PSLF, 54,300 borrowers are receiving relief through the SAVE income-driven repayment plan, and 39,200 borrowers are receiving relief through one-time account adjustments to bring payments on income-driven repayment plans up to date. This provision forgives student debt for borrowers who originally took out $12,000 or less in student loans and made as few as 10 years of payments. "I will never stop working to cancel student debt — no matter how many times Republican elected officials try to stop us."

President Joe Biden this month made climate jobs a major focus of his reelection bid. The administration plans to launch the American Climate Corps this summer with about 20,000 workers, but the funding is pieced together from various federal agencies. These prospective voters are also the target hires for the American Climate Corps, which will focus on reducing greenhouse-gas pollution in local communities and making them more resilient to extreme weather. Stevie O'Hanlon, a spokesperson for the Sunrise Movement, which mobilizes young voters focused on the climate, said the launch of the American Climate Corps was a big win. But the chances of Congress approving more funding for the workforce program are slim, given that House Republicans last year tried to block any federal spending for the American Climate Corps.

President Joe Biden on Monday quickly slapped down Donald Trump's suggestion in a CNBC interview that "there is a lot" that can be done in terms of cutting the government programs Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. "Not on my watch," Biden said in a social media post on X in response to a video of Trump's comment that was posted by his reelection campaign. The White House also issued a statement calling the idea of cutting Social Security and Medicaid "exactly backwards." Trump was asked Monday by CNBC's Joe Kernen on "Squawk Box" if he had changed his "outlook on how to handle entitlements: Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid." There is tremendous amounts of things, and numbers of things, you can do," Trump said.

CNN —President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump took big steps toward making their seemingly inevitable rematch official, as both notched huge Super Tuesday wins. Here are takeaways from Super Tuesday:Trump wins bigThe former president continued his run of dominance in the Republican nominating contest, despite losing one state, Vermont, to Nikki Haley. His approval ratings remain low, and the general election horse race polling is worrisome for Democrats. But on Super Tuesday, like every other primary day, he has dominated his few rivals – typically winning around 80% of the vote. “Tonight’s numbers showed that President Biden cannot earn back our votes with just rhetoric,” Vote Uncommitted MN spokesperson Asma Nizami said in a statement.

John Halpin Courtesy John HalpinProgressive activists have decided to use this interlude to attack Biden for his centrist positions on immigration, energy policy and the Israel-Hamas war, in particular. Like the senators from his birth state, Biden should ignore these threats from the left and stand up strongly for his vital center perspective. Looking at Michigan specifically, the threat of Arab Americans tanking Biden must also be put in wider perspective. Even with these larger trends in the state, the authors find: “In Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Hamtramck, and Livonia — the Michigan cities with the highest proportion of Arab American voters — Biden defeated Trump by a combined 38,000 or so votes. Democratic support for more moderate proposals backed by Biden is even higher: Three-quarters of Democrats support a plan to increase the number of immigration judges to speed up action on asylum claims.

When one thinks of Joe Biden, one's first thought probably isn't the phrase "good sex." But that's apparently what keeps the Bidens' marriage going strong. Based on recent polls, it does not seem that Biden is necessarily the strongest possible candidate. So, over the next six months, for the sake of his country, Biden needs to dispassionately assess whether he is, in fact, the strongest possible candidate. A third is that most Americans (a remarkable 81% of us) think that Biden is too old to run for president. (Most of us think Trump is too old, too, but fewer of us.) If, by early August, the analysis suggests that Biden is, in fact, the strongest candidate, then the best way to serve his country would be to accept the nomination.
