Making chips would go a long way toward securing Apple's AI supremacy since, unlike most companies, it would not have to rely completely on chip giant Nvidia.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, at the Hope Global Forums annual meeting in Atlanta on Dec. 11, 2023. DAVOS, Switzerland — Sam Altman said he was 'surprised' by The New York Times' lawsuit against his company OpenAI, saying its artificial intelligence models didn't need to train on the news publisher's data. My favorite “Twilight Zone” episode is the one where aliens land and, in a sign of their peaceful intentions, give world leaders a book. Government cryptographers work to translate the alien language. They decipher the title — “To Serve Man” — and that’s reassuring, so interplanetary shuttles are set up. But as the cryptographers proceed, they realize — too late — that it’s a cookbook. It was founded in 2015 as a nonprofit to serve man, to keep an eye on galloping A.I.

Sam Altman said he was reluctant about returning to OpenAI, but that feeling was "not for long." He told The Verge he first had to get over his "ego and emotions" after being ousted as CEO. Altman said his immediate reaction was one of being "hurt and angry" and that "this sucks." Altman said the feeling was "not for long," though, and first he had to "get over the ego and emotions" to discuss the possibility of resuming his role. And my immediate reaction was sort of one of defiance, it was like, 'Man, I'm hurt and angry, and I think this sucks'," Altman told The Verge.

One of the nice things about OpenAI is that it was built on distrust. It began as a nonprofit research lab because its founders didn’t think artificial intelligence should be pioneered by commercial firms, which are driven overwhelmingly by the profit motive. As it evolved, OpenAI turned into what you might call a fruitful contradiction: a for-profit company overseen by a nonprofit board with a corporate culture somewhere in between. Many of the people at the company seem simultaneously motivated by the scientist’s desire to discover, the capitalist’s desire to ship product and the do-gooder’s desire to do this all safely. The events of the past week — Sam Altman’s firing, all the drama, his rehiring — revolve around one central question: Is this fruitful contradiction sustainable?

AdvertisementAdvertisementA developer has built an AI "disinformation machine" using OpenAI-powered technology like ChatGPT. They said they wanted to see AI disinformation "work in the real world," adding that "strong language competencies of large language models are perfectly suited to reading and writing fake news articles." The AI bot would then offer different examples of the same article, written in different styles and with different viewpoints. They said it would do this by "creating fake stories, fake historical events, and creating doubt in the accuracy of the original article." i am nervous about the impact AI is going to have on future elections (at least until everyone gets used to it).

The researchers behind the SemiAnalysis blog say Google's upcoming AI Gemini smashes GPT-4. That might explain OpenAI boss Sam Altman's defensive response to a post published over the weekend titled : "Google Gemini Eats The World – Gemini Smashes GPT-4 By 5X, The GPU-Poors." Gemini is a next-gen, multimodal AI model being worked on by researchers at Google's AI arm DeepMind, and is expected to be released later in 2023. In response, SemiAnalysis' Patel posted on X that he got data on Google's GPU stores from a supplier of Google — rather than Google itself. But to say Gemini Smashes GPT-4 by 5x makes it sound like it is 5x better than GPT-4, it's not, its 5x compute.

You don't get the best first-half Nasdaq rally in 40 years simply because the Federal Reserve did this, or the yield curve in the bond market did that. It was almost as if it was prosaic to seek profits, like, "How dare you defy the teachings of the yield curve, you foolish soon-to-be- broke apostate." It was the second move, the second week of March, that told the second tale of the first half: the fall of Silicon Valley Bank. Here we had an out-of-nowhere collapse of a well-known seemingly well-run bank that ran afoul, again, of the yield curve. No company could rival Club stocks Apple (AAPL), Alphabet (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN), Microsoft and Meta Platforms (META) — nice metamorphous there and Tesla , not a Club name.
