CNN —President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of defense, Pete Hegseth, justified the January 6, 2021, US Capitol attack and spread baseless conspiracy theories claiming the initial break-in was a false flag operation carried out by leftist groups disguised as Trump supporters.
Hegseth alleged that he had seen evidence firsthand that Antifa members disguised themselves as Trump supporters at the riot.
His statements echo widely debunked conspiracy theories propagated by some in conservative circles after the Capitol attack.
As previously reported by CNN, the conspiracy about Antifa and the Capitol was promoted by a large roster of right-wing people and entities.
