The Colombian author Álvaro Mutis wrote seven novellas featuring Maqroll the Gaviero, or “lookout,” and his seafaring escapades.
Acclaimed as one of the greatest writers in the Spanish-speaking world, Mutis never took off in the United States, some say in part because his work does not fall into easily understood categories of Latin American literature.
